Angela Merkel Announces That She Will Not Seek Re-Election As German Chancellor In 2021

BBC: Angela Merkel to step down as German chancellor in 2021

Germany's Angela Merkel has said she will step down as chancellor in 2021, following recent election setbacks.

"I will not be seeking any political post after my term ends," she told a news conference in Berlin.

She also said she would not seek re-election as leader of the centre-right CDU party in December. She has held the post since 2000.

The CDU was severely weakened in Sunday's poll in the state of Hesse, the latest in a series of setbacks.

Both the CDU and its national coalition partners, the Social Democrats, were 10 percentage points down on the previous poll there.

  1. Merkel bought into open borders and the viability of a rich welfare state. Those are mutually exclusive.

She keeps it going by spending as little as possible on defense equipment but those days are over thanks to Trump. Now her monument will be the million Arabs in Germany and the problems they cause average Germans for years to come.

  2. Agreed, at least partially. Her biggest mistake was that of heart, not of reason, so I forgive her. And CNN/MSNBC will have to learn quickly. The Democrats' faith will be the same, and if ZUcker(head of CNN) is smart, he will smell the coffee. The time Democrats can count on the women's and black vote is over - which means they will lose power for sure (projections require them to keep 90% of African American vote, which is very, very unlikely as Trump made huge gains). So yeah, if Zucker is smart (which he clearly is not, given how his network's ratings are now lower than Nikkelodeon's for 2 years in a row), he will change course and replace 1-2 of his firebrand anchors. America can have more division or less, and from everything I am seeing, they want less.

  4. Although he is probably right, as Germany has apologized like no other country in the history of the world, for its war crimes, I don't think this is helpful @ GOP guy, especially not in today's world of rising Antisemitism. Calling it like it is. Can the left call out their own too?
