Early This Year 17 Russian Fighter Jets Buzzed The U.K. Destroyer HMS Duncan Near Crimea

The Russian jets, pictured, flew low and close to the ship in an act of 'brazen hostility', according to Defence Minister Gavin Williamson

* Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson described action as 'brazen hostility'
* Footage is shown on Channel 5 documentary Warship: Life at Sea tonight

Incredible footage has captured the moment a Royal Navy warship was 'buzzed' by 17 Russian fighter jets off the coast of Crimea.

A new Channel 5 documentary captured the dangerous moment as HMS Duncan led a Nato fleet through the Black Sea in May.

'Buzzing' is when an aircraft flies fast and low past a building or another vehicle and the Russian fighters were so close to the Type 45 destroyer their electronics could have been scrambled by the ships, which could have caused a crash.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson described the incident as 'brazen hostility' from Russia while he praised the work done by the flagship, worth around £1billion, and her crew.

  2. Well, why not scramble the jet's electronics? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
By the way, Anon....Churchill passed on years ago. I remember the funeral ceremony.

    1. No no no Anon, as long as you are around Churchill is not dead. By the way it's two snaps up and circle, but I'm sure you were quite aware of that.

  4. "Well, why not scramble the jets electronics?" That's a very good questions actually. The reason this likely will not happen is that the Russians being the best in the world at cyber warfare will have already thought about this and their electronics will be defended to well against this for the attacks to be successful. Should the British have moved forward with such an attempt it likely would have failed with the Russian cyber response to this devastating to the British warship.

Essentially, if you lack the athleticism of the world class athlete it is generally not going to be a good idea to challenge him to a duel. In fact, quite the opposite. It's probably going to be in your profound interests to take prudent steps to avoid such a duel and to do ally can within reason to ensure there are not any misunderstandings.

At least this is my "take" on this gleaned from what I deem to be careful observations and thorough study. With that said I do find it fascinating that two different people can view the same raw information at the same time, under the same circumstances, and reach completely different conclusions. As such, my "take" may be in error. If my "take" is accurate or policy makers believed it to be, then naturally certain actions and policies on our part would flow from this.

A bit off topic here but Trump and his team have given Putin and Xi a headache if not a full blown nightmare. If the Russians and Putin wanted Trump as POTUS, which seems unlikely, this seems to be among the worst mistakes a major world power has ever made. It appears to me that the Clinton campaign fabricated the whole nonsense of Russian collusion and interference in an attempt to explain away their loss to a superior candidate and person who has a much better message and now they believe their own nonsense. In so doing they exacerbated Cold War 2, a war we didn't need, can't readily afford, may not be able to win, and even if we do win we gain nothing of value. Nice job!!

With that said Trump could, in my opinion, do a better job of actually trying to end it but when one finds themselves in a fight based upon prior decisions made by others and no way out except to fight then fight they must. An example of this is WW2. Had different decisions been made prior to the war perhaps it could have been avoided. At some point, it became to late and the only option was to fight. While Trump has thus far been a headache or even a nightmare to Putin and Xi, team Trump needs to do a better a job of explaining why we need to fight a new cold war that we may not be able to win and even if we do "win" what are we going to obtain of value.

    1. C'mon, the only reason they didn't was to not cause,an accident and escalation, the destroyer and her escorts would have been more than.capable of jamming electronics if there was the political will.

  6. Anon (1:53PM),

Was that directed at me? No one tells me what to say. I read from multiple sources and follow multiple sources of news and analysis. From this we try to reach an informed conclusion. We are not always going to be right.

Also, in my work as a Certified Public Accountant in the United States, I meet and interact with a number of people from a variety of fields. I try to get to know them and understand the issues they face. From reading multiple sources and conversations with multiple people who are cyber security experts it appears to me that Russians/eastern Europeans are the best cyber attackers in the world. As such, I conclude the British would have found themselves in a real mess had they tried a cyber attack on the Russian aircraft. As stated, its probably best not to challenge the world class athlete to a duel.

    Fazman,

Not causing an accident and escalation are good enough reasons right there. Actually we could stop there. Also, I am pretty sure the captain and crews of the destroyer and its escorts carefully concluded that it may not be a good day to die should the Russians decide to retaliate. Perhaps the destroyer and its escorts win but this was not a good time to escalate the conflict. I will watch the video time permitting. It seems the Russians may have reached the same conclusion.

"....if there was political will." There isn't. A number of people simply don't think its a good idea to provoke arguably the most powerful military force on earth for no good reason. Those whose loved ones lives are at stake and whose heads are on the chopping block should things go awry are going to be far more circumspect about certain things than will those who are cheering from a distance whose loved ones are in no danger.
