Yun Sun, 38 North: The Second Trump-Kim Summit: Where Is China?
On the eve of the second summit between the top leaders of the US and North Korea in Hanoi, most attention is focused on what might be the concrete substance/steps of North Korea’s denuclearization and the reciprocal measures that the US will offer in return that come out of the summit. In sharp contrast to the pivotal role China played regarding North Korea during the first year of the Trump administration, China’s role in influencing North Korea’s strategic calculus no longer attracts the spotlight. However, the idea that Beijing has been marginalized in peace and denuclearization talks with North Korea ignores the quiet, yet active consultation happening behind the scenes.

You can be fairly assured that every intel agency in the world is thick as thieves in Vietnam right now. The Chinese especially. They'd be more invasive if Vietnam didn't detest them. But they are hacking every single phone. /Luring young staffers with pots of honey. Listening devices spread absolutely everywhere. And they're competing with the GRU, NIS, ISD, CIA, etc...

China has infiltrated the north of Vietnam for years. Many Vietnamese complain about the influence of China in the north. Some road signs even changed to chinese on their demand. Many public officials in the pockets of the Chinese. But keep in mind, internal Vietnamese news are controlled by Vietnamese government, so in politics change does come (incl a bit more free speech than 5-10 years ago - see the famous blogger case in nha trang), but a bit slower. It is still very much an authoritarian state in terms of politics. But it's much better than China with regards to how Vietnamese politicians treat their own peoole (and westerners are pretty much untouchables). In general, if you ever get to visit Vietnam, you'll find it very difficult to ever find a mean spirited person in Vietnam. I have many Vietnamese friends and also some Chinese, but in general the Vietnamese are an incredible people and I'd say perhaps some of the nicest in the world. I really hope their economic success continues and that they keep opening up to the west culturally and with their economy. It's already much easier to do business in Vietnam than it is in China, which I like a lot. But yeah you do have Chinese influence there and it's not the good kind of influence..china looks at Vietnam as a poor cousin, a province that they believe they own..you know. .typical Chinese government mentality. .by the way. ..the Vietnamese HATE the Chinese. .something many "westerners" (as we're called over there) don't fully understand. And Vietnamese LOVE America. Which is also a bit surprising, especially as you often still see the consequences of warfare (eg agent orange caused mutations, people missing arms etc)..you will never believe how nice and how strong Vietnamese are. I hope that they join the US one day as a partner. I'd be proud to have them as partners in any field.

ReplyDeleteU.S. drops demand for full accounting of N. Korea nuclear program ahead of talks
The country's refusal to disclose all of its nuclear materials is the issue over which talks fell apart a decade ago.
CNN traitors of course gitty and rooting for failure
DeleteThink about that. Think about if the summit might have been successful if you hadn't bought into the Congress hearing yesterday. It's so easy to be a CNN fool and root for failure and never having to explain your actions or think about consequences.

DeleteChina has been helping, supporting, aiding North Korea for almost 70 years. No doubt China helped North Korea with nuclear weapons and manufacturing. No doubt they carry great weight in these negotiations. After all China attacked US troops in 1950 in support for a defeated North Korea and lost about 1 million men as a result.
