Tasha Wibawa, ABC News Online: China and North Korea's 'blood alliance' has complicated the chances of reunification

North Korea's relationship with China has been historically described as akin to "lips and teeth", in that the nations cannot function without each other.

The Chinese saying refers to the country's 70-year relationship dating back to the Korean War of 1950-1953, when the Soviet Union and China supported North Korea as its army invaded South Korea.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, China has been described by analysts as "the most important country sustaining North Korea", but the historic "blood alliance" — a term used to describe their relationship dating back to North Korean supreme leader Kim Il-sung, and Chairman Mao Zedong — has been far more complicated.

WNU Editor: What China and Kim Jong-un may want is one thing. What the people in North Korea may want is another. For the moment the status quo is being maintained through threats and force, but if history is any guide, when a population wants something else they usually get it. The North Koreans are now being exposed to the outside world, and I am sure there is a hunger to live that type of life instead of the one that they have been living through all their lives. The question is .... when will that happen, and the role that South Korea will play.

  2. Wtf is China thinking? First they arm North Korea and help break sanctions. Then they're OK with north Korea threatening the US with a nuclear (!) attack. Now this. Ffs China, stop it or war might be unavoidable.

  3. And our media needs to be held accountable and not tomorrow but today. This needs to stop like yesterday..
DURING the north Korea nuclear disarmament negotiations cnn, msnbc thought it's in our interest to sabotage our president with a publicly televised interrogation of a known liar - a witness so untrustworthy even Mueller's team wouldn't call him as witness. Think about that.
We need to stand up against this injustice

  4. As you know, North Korea is a prison. Its people are kept on a very short leash. Starved, brainwashed, and with a gun pointed at the family of anyone who would step out of line. Those in the position of leadership are regularly purged to eliminate the faintest possibility of disloyalty. I doubt very much the people of North Korea will ever be allowed to rise up against the government, certainly not when it has a powerful and brutal ally in China to support it.

    1. I guess so. At first I didn't understand why Democrats and cnn/msnbc held the Michael Cohen show trial on the day of North Korea negotiatons. Now I'm guessing it's for the same reason CNN always has these nice ads about China in their homepage. We all know that Washington is lobbied heavily by China. And who do they give most money? The Democrats of course. It is sickening. look also at the revenue stream cnn has from China. Biggest single revenue after local market. Fox news? Not one dime from China. Who pushes divisive narrative 24/7 that brings the US almost to civil war? CNN.

Think! Follow the money! Investigate the corrupt politicians!

  5. Meanwhile, Russian media also reported Monday that members of its parliamentary group on relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (the official name for North Korea) will go to Pyongyang on April 12. The meeting is aimed at discussing the creation of a platform for dialogue between Russian, North Korean and South Korean parliamentarians.

"The trip is scheduled for April 12... Actively supported the creation of such a platform by friendship groups - Russian and North Korean. [South Korean parliamentarians] are also ready to join this work, we met, they are interested in having such a platform created," Kazbek Taysaev, the head of the group, said. He noted that "great interest" was also expressed by China for the talks.
