DW: German institute: Number of all-out wars in decline, limited wars on the rise
The number of all-out wars decreased from 20 in 2017 to 16 in 2018, according to the Heidelberg-based researchers. The number of so-called "limited wars," however, surged from 16 to 24.
The "Conflict Barometer" published by Heidelberg University's Institute for International Conflict Research (HIIK) identified only nine former conflicts as being settled or becoming inactive last year.
Worldwide, 372 conflicts had seethed at varying levels of intensity, the HIIK said, with 213, or 57 percent, fought out violently.

There are many reasons for smaller wars..
ReplyDelete1) Counter-terrorism is still a big agenda for the US and has shifted their war machine to smaller units
2) MAD and other technological developments make full-out war too costly
3) People want less war, are more connected, and the internet (while having its own issues) does help to bring light to large scale conflicts --- but
4) Leaders like Putin understand that democracies like the US are terrible at paying attention to low scale conflicts that just drag on and on .. so for example, when the Ukraine was invaded by Russia - Russians knew that if they pretend long and hard enough it's not them, that many news networks (e.g. CNN) just would't get it and move on to "BREAKING NEWS" about something else.. e.g. the last 2 years breaking news about Trump, while Russia killed about a million Syrians together with Assad.
So in general the shift is not only away from large scale conflicts for good reasons, but also for sinister reasons: Instead of large war, where opposing sides can be easily identified, slowly moving conflicts, low intensity, are so boring to report on that Wolf and Lemmon and whatever idiot you have at CNN, will rather report on TRUMP and RUSSSSIIIAAA COLLUSION ..
lolz

ReplyDeleteSo if the US is not there there is no big agenda? ISIS or Al Qaeda have no big agendas.
So if ISIS attacks and takes over Mali there is no agenda if the US is not there?
Wolf has been a disgrace since 1991 and the Gulf War.
Small scale conflicts are like following baseball teams. You keep scorecards.
ReplyDeleteIt is not hard once you put your mind to it.
Why do governments let people kill each other God has spoken don't you killers love Truth I think your all fools
ReplyDeleteIf there's ever a leader that manages to avoid killing, boy. ..I'd follow him/her to the end of time
