Reuters: U.S. approved secret nuclear power work for Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry has approved six secret authorizations by companies to sell nuclear power technology and assistance to Saudi Arabia, according to a copy of a document seen by Reuters on Wednesday.

The Trump administration has quietly pursued a wider deal on sharing U.S. nuclear power technology with Saudi Arabia, which aims to build at least two nuclear power plants. Several countries including the United States, South Korea and Russia are in competition for that deal, and the winners are expected to be announced later this year by Saudi Arabia.

Perry’s approvals, known as Part 810 authorizations, allow companies to do preliminary work on nuclear power ahead of any deal but not ship equipment that would go into a plant, a source with knowledge of the agreements said on condition of anonymity. The approvals were first reported by the Daily Beast.

  1. Saudi is determined to get nuclear tech. The options are they get it from Russia, China or US. Of three bad options, the least bad is keeping them in our sphere with our tech and keeping Russia and China out.

  2. Russ,

You are essentially spot on. There's very little I could add except to say that based upon the goal that POTUS has laid out of making America great which naturally would mean striving to be a major world power this is really the only viable option for America.

Any person who has a background in business, managing businesses, and assisting those who do to maximize their net incomes will naturally develop a keen understanding of "realpolitik." Coming from such a background POTUS IMHO it goes without saying that POTUS will understand this concept very, very well. As for those who make their living elsewhere which would include many in government, university professors, and those who run in those circles they sometimes tend to lack such understandings.

I'm reminded of the death of the Saudi "journalist." This appears to have been a manufactured crisis designed specifically to undercut American interests. The actions of those going hysterical over it could be based upon simple ideology with those wishing to undermine America exploiting them as "useful idiots" or there could be something more sinister at work. Perhaps Trump's opponents wish to keep America mired in mediocrity all while spouting ridiculous non sense about America being "exceptional," a "superpower, "hyperpower" or whatever foolishness is the flavor for the day. Fortunately to the best of my knowledge POTUS has refrained from such silliness. If one wishes to undermine the goal of making America great, there seems to be no better way to go about this than by driving the Saudi government to link up with Russia and China.

Furthermore any replacement for the Saudi government will be far worse than the current one. As such, I would strongly suggest that our leaders take extreme caution NOT to destabilize it.
