New York Times: Wuhan Coronavirus Looks Increasingly Like a Pandemic, Experts Say
Rapidly rising caseloads alarm researchers, who fear the virus may make its way across the globe. But scientists cannot yet predict how many deaths may result.
The Wuhan coronavirus spreading from China is now likely to become a pandemic that circles the globe, according to many of the world’s leading infectious disease experts.
The prospect is daunting. A pandemic — an ongoing epidemic on two or more continents — may well have global consequences, despite the extraordinary travel restrictions and quarantines now imposed by China and other countries, including the United States.
Scientists do not yet know how lethal the new coronavirus is, however, so there is uncertainty about how much damage a pandemic might cause. But there is growing consensus that the pathogen is readily transmitted between humans.
The Wuhan coronavirus is spreading more like influenza, which is highly transmissible, than like its slow-moving viral cousins, SARS and MERS, scientists have found.

WNU Editor: The Western world is better prepared to handle such a crisis. But for the rest of the world with inadequate medical services, this outbreak has the very real potential of becoming a pandemic.

Two years ago, Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates warned that the world should be “preparing for a pandemic in the same serious way it prepares for war”. Gates, whose foundation has invested heavily in global health, suggested staging simulations, war games and preparedness exercises to simulate how diseases could spread and to identify the best response.
ReplyDeleteThe Trump administration has done exactly the opposite: It has slashed funding for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its infectious disease research. For fiscal year 2020, Trump proposed cutting the CDC budget by US$1.3 billion, nearly 20% below the 2019 level.
It should be cut.

ReplyDeleteIf he wanted, anon, Mr. Gates and a few others are financially fully capable of taking up the slack if they so desire.
Why even Bob could cast a spell by switching to 4 flyspecks and likely bring this entire situation to a sudden stop if he wanted.
Earth calling Bob. Earth calling Bob. Come in please.
Bill Gates did invent MS-DOS. He bought it. He then leveraged his mother's connections to IBM.
ReplyDeleteSteve Jobs has a true rags to riches story. Bill gates not so much.

Bill Gates and DOS.
ReplyDeleteWay back before everyone had a computer I was working in a department with 40 people. We shared, on a booked time basis, 20 computers, all using DOS. The university guys were right at home. Having never used a computer I had a really hard time using the DOS computers. It was ether hand write my stuff out for the Word Processor operators (4) or struggle with DOS.
I bought a PC with Windows 3.1 for $3,000. The beauty of it was the GUI and the fact that you could save your work in DOS on a disc for printing the next day at work. I learned to type in high school and at a fairly good speed too.
With the GUI it was easy to fool around on the PC and when I set up my Memo format form. For the line under all the heading stuff our format required a solid line across the page. I made that line using the acrynom for "cover your ass" (cya) and set it at the smallest font size available. Only one person a typist noticed the slight fussiness and discovered what I had done. It was a good joke.
Four months later the company got rid of the DOS equipment and put a PC with 3.1 on everyone's desk. For about three weeks I was deluged with requests to show the DOS folks how to do stuff.
Later when I learned/heard that copies of all emails were going through some site monitored by the NSA I put the line on my emails only instead of cya I used some of the key words they were suppossidly looking for, just for fun. A couple years ago I told my grandson about it. He took some of the words, set the font supper low and used the now dots to formulate capital letters.
I have often wondered if that monitoring was really done and if they were astute enough to anticipate someone doing what we did and setting their monitoring device accordingly.
Sorry anon 2:45 PM. I was just having fun. Try it sometime. You might like it.
ReplyDeleteBob; enjoyed your post. Windows 3.1., Dos. That's history.

Some one messed up their time line. So much for a consistent legend.
ReplyDeleteFred,
I did not call anyone a name.
I said that Bill Gates did not create DOS. He bought it.
I also said many climate models are GIGO. Have you done any modeling?
If NOW HEAR THIS, then don't show up.
