Should The WHO Director General Resign?

Zero Hedge: Petition For WHO Director General To Resign Reaches Over 210,000 Signatures

Amidst the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, there has been plenty of skepticism about the World Health Organization's handling of the epidemic thus far. That skepticism has now grown into a call for the WHO Director General to resign, in the form of a petition with over 200,000 signatures.

  1. The epic disease-that-will-kill-us-all is in 2020 called coronavirus. It went by other names earlier: Zika, SARS, Ebola, swine flu, etc. People react so strongly not just out of fear but because they think they deserve some sort of cosmic punishment. This world is a mess of guilt and anxiousness.

  2. We need to have patience, this takes time. The idea of firing someone because of something happening in the middle of China is ridicules.

  3. The Trump administration has done exactly the opposite: It has slashed funding for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its infectious disease research. For fiscal year 2020, Trump proposed cutting the CDC budget by US$1.3 billion, nearly 20% below the 2019 level.

As a specialist in budgeting, I recognize that there are many claims on public resources. But when it comes to public health, I believe it is vital to invest early in prevention. Starving the CDC of critical funding will make it far harder for the government to react quickly to a public health emergency.

  4. He is UN so there is that. Fire him.

On the other hand some parts of the UN did okay work. Also the 'we want everything this minute' crowd are wrong and we should not cave into them.
