New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell blames Trump for her not canceling Mardi Gras: "When it’s not taken seriously at the federal level. It’s very difficult to transcend down to the local level in making these decisions." pic.twitter.com/JF1VgNsJHB— Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) March 26, 2020
CBS: New Orleans mayor says she would have canceled Mardi Gras if Trump administration had warned about coronavirus dangers
The mayor of New Orleans said Thursday that she would have canceled the city's famous Mardi Gras celebrations last month if the federal government had been clearer about the dangers posed by coronavirus. Orleans Parish is now one of America's hardest-hit regions during the pandemic — with the nation's highest per capita death rate from the virus.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell, a Democrat, said that "no red flags were given" by federal agencies before its Mardi Gras celebrations in late February — just weeks before the World Health Organization declared coronavirus a pandemic.

WNU Editor: Talk about passing the buck and refusing to take responsibility. All that this mayor had to do was watch the news to know that this pandemic was very real, starting with President Trump putting a travel ban on China in February.

Now industry executives and regulators are worried that Congress's generosity toward homeowners could wipe out those companies, causing investors not to get paid and potentially bankrupting the entire mortgage finance system — a domino effect that would make it much harder for borrowers to access credit to buy homes.
ReplyDeleteHousing lobbyists sounded the alarm to Senate staff about the potential danger, but the sheer scale of the rescue bill and the focus on communicating the industry’s other big concerns — such as the details of how long mortgages would be suspended — meant their warnings were unheeded in the rush to finish the massive legislation.
Yet while the final bill allocates $454 billion for the Treasury Department to support the Federal Reserve’s emergency lending programs, including for large corporations, there is no overt requirement for lending to mortgage companies, despite a weeklong lobbying push by the industry.
“There was a strong desire on the part of housing lobbyists to have the bill explicitly direct the Fed and Treasury to use some of that money to finance servicing advances,” said Michael Bright, CEO of the Structured Finance Association, which represents 370 financial institutions in the bond market.
Now industry lobbyists are turning their efforts to Trump administration officials.

Its no Trump's fault that "Chocolate City" had their parade and now is looking to become the next epicenter of the Chinese virus. Mayors govern their own cities. The fact that "Chocolate City" has had a string of incompetents squatting in that office is the fault of the local voters, not the evil Orange Man.

The president has repeatedly suggested that states should take the leading role in acquiring needed materials to respond to the virus, and on Friday he singled out two governors who have been outspoken in calling on the federal government to do more to facilitate the response: Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.).
ReplyDeleteTrump derided Inslee as a "failed presidential candidate" who is "constantly chirping." He told reporters Whitmer "has no idea what's going on" and asserted his administration has "taken such great care of Michigan."
Asked what specifically governors could be doing to assuage his concerns, Trump said he expected gratitude for what's been done so far.
“I want them to be appreciative. I don’t want them to say things that aren’t true," he said. "I want them to be appreciative. We’ve done a great job. And I’m not talking about me, I’m talking about [Vice President] Mike Pence, the task force, I’m talking about FEMA, the Army Corps of Engineers."

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Friday he has asked Vice President Mike Pence not to call governors he says have not been "appreciative" enough of his efforts on coronavirus – a group of critics that included a governor he referred to only by gender,
ReplyDelete"Don't call the woman in Michigan," Trump said at a press conference while discussing Pence's work as head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
That governor – Gretchen Whitmer – replied on Twitter that "right now, we all need to be focused on fighting the virus, not each other."
"I’m willing to work with anyone as long as we get the personal protective equipment we need for the people of Michigan," she said.
Harsh words:President Trump slams Gov. Whitmer as he weighs disaster request for Michigan
resident Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, President Trump and his administration have become a two-faced Janus on the law’s future.
ReplyDeleteAt this very moment, while our country is struggling through a global health crisis of a kind not seen since 1918, President Trump has directed lawyers in his administration to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to destroy the Affordable Care Act. In fact, earlier this month — back on March 5, less than a week after the first COVID-19 death on American soil — President Trump himself said to a Fox News town hall that he wants “to terminate Obamacare because it’s bad.” Yet in recent days, other Trump administration officials are signaling that they are “considering the launch of a special enrollment period for people to sign up” for insurance under the ACA, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. What gives?
Don’t be fooled: President Trump joins a long line of conservatives and Republicans who have attempted to tear the ACA apart over the past decade, and his current efforts in the Supreme Court show where his priorities really are. But if we ever needed a law like the ACA — and for the federal government to do everything in its power to strengthen such a law instead of trying to destroy it — our nation needs it now.
ReplyDeleteAnd Fred desperately screamed at 5:46 and again at 5:49.
