U.S. Nuclear Forces Have Not Been Impacted By The Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic

Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana is home to B-52 bombers that were built five and a half decades ago, but still play a central role in today's U.S. 'nuclear triad.' (U.S. Air Force)

Politico: How the nuclear force dodged the coronavirus

Preparing for doomsday has its benefits in a pandemic.

The nation's nuclear forces, which prepare for the worst even on good days, were among the earliest and most aggressive in planning for the coronavirus pandemic, according to interviews with military officials and an internal timeline of key actions.

And the efforts appear to have paid off.

While other parts of the military have been hard-hit by the virus — including hundreds of sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and dozens of new Army recruits packed into barracks — bomber squadrons, ballistic missile submarines and intercontinental ballistic missile crews have been largely spared, despite their similarly close quarters.

Commanders attribute the success to their early response, which began with a directive in January to review "disease containment plans" at bases around the country and included staggering and extending deployment schedules, tracking the virus in surrounding communities, and deploying inspection teams on bases to ensure social distancing measures were being followed.

  1. One thing for sure, the nuclear sub and missile silo crews are some of the most isolated people on the planet. Second only to the bomber crews.

  3. I would suggest that covid 19 is or has been inside most, if not every military base & unit inc nuclear weapon armed combat units & this is propaganda to attempt to put China off military actions in various parts of the world. 🖖🤧.

  4. What about the nuclear subs though?

The nuclear subs are perhaps the most important part of the nuclear triad, as their key element is to be able to dive for long, long times and be hard to find/detect.

BUT.. with covid-19.. if you've got just one of those infected wuhan virus folks on board, you cannot stay submerged for a long time.. you NEED fresh air.. but on a sub.. with a virus like this.. it would spread even faster than on an aircraft carrier.. and we saw what covid-19 did there.

Telling you... covid-19 is such a superb virus, it's hard to distinguish it from a first strike weapon. That's why Chinese non-cooperation is so worrisome on top of it all. For world peace and world stability they should be more transparent, because the Wuhan virus came from Wuhan, China. And they have been lying and making things worse.
