WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump will not take the dramatic step for now of seeking control of the National Guard, his national security adviser said on Sunday as protests flared in U.S. cities after the death of an unarmed black man in Minneapolis in police custody last week.

“We’re not going to federalize the Guard at this time. But, if necessary, we have further military assets that can be deployed,” Robert O’Brien told reporters at the White House. “We’ll do whatever the governors or mayors need to keep control of their cities.”

Civil unrest has swelled following Monday’s death of George Floyd, who was shown on video gasping for breath as a white Minneapolis policeman knelt on his neck.

The National Guard said on Sunday that 5,000 soldiers and airmen had been activated in 15 states and Washington, D.C., but that “state and local law enforcement agencies remain responsible for security.”

WNU Editor: If I do not see the need to federalize the Guard, I am sure the President and advisers feel the same way. This is a still a local and state crisis, and until they ask for help, it will remain a local and state issue.

  1. It looks like here in Southern California they are just waiting for all the stores to be looted out for things to end. Without consequences why on earth would they stop?

I had an idea for Targets in the area (which are all closed), leave the doors open but cover the entire floor with cooking oil, then just sit back and watch the fun...you could probably raise millions on gofundme just for creativity and entertainment.

  2. The inept mayors and governors who are now failing their constituents during these riots would LOVE for Trump to take over and relieve them of any responsibility for the mess that they have allowed to perpetuate.

People outside these pockets of riots are furious. They are no longer angry or sad at the murder of George Floyd, they are now livid at the looters and the rioters. And they are quietly seething at the politicians and media who coddle them.

George Floyd is now forgotten in any way other than using his murder to justify riots and looting. /Great legacy!

Big city police chiefs are terrified to allow the use any force at all. Actually apologizing for making arrests for curfew violations.

They would all be enormously relieved if they cold shift their dereliction of duty to President Trump - even as they shriek their phony opposition.

The cities where arson and looting went unchecked have ruined themselves. Any business (big or small) would be foolish to return.

Every city currently under siege is a Leftist bastion - woke progressives with criminal-friendly policies. /That worked out well.

As the days pass and the riots stop, these cities will be left with the permanent stain and stigma of, "Stay the hell away from this shithole." They've sure earned it.

  3. They better steer clear of the Korean businesses, most of these "protesters" are too young to remember what happen during the 90's LA riots when that line was crossed.
