Reuters: U.S. to withdraw about 12,000 troops from Germany but nearly half to stay in Europe
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military on Wednesday unveiled plans to withdraw about 12,000 troops from Germany following a decision by President Donald Trump, but said it will keep nearly half of them in Europe to address tension with Russia.
Trump announced his intention last month to cut the 36,000-strong U.S. troop contingent in Germany to 25,000, faulting the close U.S. ally for failing to meet NATO’s defense spending target and accusing it of taking advantage of the United States on trade.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper has sought, however, to present the pullout in a way that would prevent undermining NATO and its efforts to deter Russian intervention, following Moscow’s 2014 annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.

President's Trump withdrawal is a fraction of Obama's withdrawal. Obama withdrew almost 40,000 in his time in office. Let that sink in. 40,000 troops left Germany under Obama's rule and they came home, including all US tanks and heavy armor. Where was the media outrage? Democratic partisan outrage? Silent, mute, deaf and dumb was where they were.
ReplyDeleteWhat President Trump is doing is taking less than half the remaining from Germany and assigning them new missions. Which old missions will end? Which new missions will start? Big German complexes for US are hospital, army training grounds, USAF bases, command and control. I'd guess army and USAF bases are being shuttered for good leaving hospital and command and control remaining in Germany. Combat power is leaving Germany. Poland will get most, probably mobile air defense and long range fires.
So Obama withdraw 2 brigade com bat teams from Europe. Why did not the Democrats have a hissy fit then?
ReplyDeleteOh right, whenever Obama planted a butt stinky, they built a shrine around it and started making pilgrimages to it.
"In a press release sent out late on Friday, the Pentagon said the number of brigade combat teams in the continent – which normally count for 4,000 soldiers each – would come down from four to three in 2015. "
