Russia's foreign ministry said Friday that it's lodged a formal protest with the United States over this week's incident in the Sea of Japan, calling it a "provocation designed to disturb the peace".
Russia further said Friday it's military won't hesitate to "respond" the next time the US Navy brazenly violates its maritime borders.
During the Tuesday encounter a Russian warship was described as chasing the US destroyer out of the area.
"We warn the US not to repeat the violation. We reserve the right to respond in the future," a foreign ministry statement said.

WNU Editor: Going into the Gulf of Peter the Great and near one of Russia's important naval ports is pushing it.

so why did the US ship go there? On orders? Or an accident...
Why is it pushing it?
How many nautical miles was it from Russian land/dry land?
"In 1984, the U.S.S.R declared a system of straight baselines along its coasts, including a straight baseline enclosing Peter the Great Bay as claimed internal waters. This 106-nautical mile (nm) closing line is inconsistent with the rules of international law as reflected in the Law of the Sea Convention to enclose the waters of a bay. By drawing this closing line, the U.S.S.R. attempted to claim more internal waters - and territorial sea farther from shore - than it is entitled to claim under international law. Russia has continued the U.S.S.R. claim."
Russian ships have been 30 miles from American coasts.
Territorial waters are 3 to 12 miles. EEC is 200 nautical miles. If the US warship did not come with in 12 miles of Russian landfall, then problem?

Excellent question. Trump's eyes on are on 2024. As such, since one of his chief and most effective selling points is he hasn't initiated any new wars nor has he escalated any, he certainly isn't going to "push it." I'm inclined to think it was an accident, however, watching certain military officials in recent years some of them are just stupid enough to "push it." Perhaps acting in concert with the deep state or other anti-Trump elements they agreed to "push it." Without inside information we can't really "know."
In America, comrade, generals do not push wars. Wars are initiated by a president and gets approval by Congress. Read up.
President Trump long ago said he was introducing unpredictability in ship movements as a problem solving tactic for our enemies. Russia just got a taste. In fact Russia has routinely sailed near US East coast sensitive military sites.
Oh really? I have never heard anything about it
"In fact Russia has routinely sailed near US East coast sensitive military sites."
Russians sail 30 to 90 miles, which is close enough for elint. Their non-warship spy ships have ant air missiles.
That is rather odd. Are they expected to be on station right up t the point of a shooting war?
The US effort is freedom of navigation or send a message exercise.
I wonder why libs are all upset. After all Trump is under Putin's control per libtards.
What have you not heard about?
"In America comrade..." actually I think it is you who need to "read up." First of all read my posts in their entirety. If you had done so, you would know I'm not Russian nor am I a communist.
I'm well aware of how things are supposed to work which you correctly point out. POTUS ran on a platform of lessening tensions with the major nuclear power of Russia. To this end, a very careful diplomatic effort was initiated.
Something has gone wrong. I suspect it's a combination of the following: 1.) generals and other leaders have shown a willingness to disregard and insemination the directives of the duly elected POTUS and there's been no coats for this. "Read up." 2.) POTUS has a beautiful wife of eastern European descent. It's likeky this has clouded his judgement at times.
