Furious voters have slammed the Biden administration for considering taxing motorists by the mile to fund their $3 trillion climate-friendly infrastructure plans, claiming it hurts rural Americans but not 'millionaires' and their Teslas.
The White House is mulling a tax on vehicles' mileage to pay for a proposal to revamp the nation's infrastructure expected in the coming days, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Friday.
Critics chimed in that that the tax idea from 'Pothole Pete' would considerably hurt people who own electric vehicles or who live in rural areas where distances there are more miles between destinations.

WNU Editor: This idea of taxing cars by the mile has been circulating around for the past few years. With electric cars being the trend, revenue from gas taxes will decrease .... a fact that governments are too well aware of that.
But is the public prepared for such a new tax?
I doubt it.
And I doubt that Congress has the courage to test that public support.
The mileage tax is a regressive tax. Been working from home since COVID. Only really have to travel a few miles to the grocery store every other week. White collar work often times can be like that.
ReplyDeleteButtigieg needs to buy a clue. Blue collar work is not like that.
Buttigieg is no more qualified for Transportation Secretary than he was for mayor of a city of 102,026 citizens. Buttigieg could not fix the pothole or crime problems of South Bend. He will do far worse in a job vastly scaled up.
Buttigieg had one job related to Transportation Secretary, which was a mayor. He failed at mayor. His only other qualification was being gay.
If being gay is an important qualification, then I think write Andrew Sullivan is a better person for Secretary. First, he is successful at his job. Second, he is a thinking person.
And people in rural areas and the suburbs drive more than in the cities. So let's be honest, this is wealth redistribution from red counties to blue ones.
ReplyDeleteThis will raise the price on everything. The amount of goods that are transported long distances by truck is staggering. This will just trickle down hill to hurt the people least sable to cope with higher food prices.
