President Biden Says Nord Stream 2 Sanctions Would Be 'Counter-Productive' For European Ties

RFE: Biden Says Nord Stream 2 Sanctions Would Damage Relations With European Allies

U.S. President Joe Biden said his administration decided to waive sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline because the project is almost finished, and sanctions would have harmed relations with European allies.

“It’s almost completely finished,” Biden said of the gas pipeline that will bring gas from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea.

“It’s not like I can allow Germany to do something or not.... To go ahead and impose sanctions now would, I think, be counterproductive in terms of our European relations," he told reporters, adding that he was against the project since its inception.

  1. By the American pipeline I am assuming Keystone is what is being referenced. This was indeed a very stupid idea and an unforced error on our part. This eliminated a large number of good paying union jobs and it is a step in the wrong direction strategically as we lose out on the revenue from this as well as hampering our ability to be a major factor in the world energy market.

As to the question of the Russian pipeline, to imply that Biden is "letting" this go forward suggests he or the US has it in his power to stop it which seems dubious at best. Thus far sanctions against Russia seem to have been ineffective at best and likely made things worse. IF maintaining good relations with western European nations is going to be important, then obviously sanctions against the pipeline would be untenable as the western European nations are heavily dependent upon Russia for their energy needs and further continuing the sanctions is a futile move much like when one finds themselves in a hole the best thing to do is stop digging!! As such, team Biden had little choice here. Had president Trump done this he no doubt would have been heavily criticized.

  2. Is Canada an allied or not? Canceling Keystone is not damaging our relation with Canada? Does it help the American economy? Ideology has ravaged USSR it will ravage America as well.
