Reuters: France, Germany propose EU summit with Russia's Putin, diplomats say

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -France and Germany proposed on Wednesday a European Union summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to improve relations, two diplomats said, potentially paving the way for the first such meeting since 2014.

Such an event would follow U.S. President Joe Biden's summit in Geneva with Putin earlier this month and reflects concern in Paris and Berlin that the EU's approach to Russia in recent years has mainly been focused on sanctions on Moscow.

"We need to have a discussion about how to get away from this negative spiral ... but we need to advance united," one senior EU diplomat said, adding that some Baltic countries wary of Russia may not agree to a summit.

Update #3: The Russian ambassador to the EU is right. The EU needs to get their act together when it comes to Russia .... Europe should 'get its act together' on Russia, says Russian ambassador (Euronews).

  1. Merkel said last year she was resigning in 12 months. It has been about 10. I see no signs of the fat fraulein resigning. Her putative successor inexplicably got cold feet about 2 months after Herr Merkel's announcement. Shucks darn life is a bitch and now Merkel feels compelled to pull a Senator Kennedy or a Senator McCain.

I mean who else can make Germany 100% energy dependent on NATO's chief adversary or suck Russian cock with gusto like Merkel?

Allying with Russia makes sense, but only if you do it from a position of strength not weakness. Cozying up to Russia as a weakling is to go into battle with Hunnic mercenaries where the decision is seriously in doubt. Or to live along the North Sea AD 800 and think the rich entrepĂ´t you live in does not need walls.

Well at least Aw shucks, golly gee wiz, 'I am one of you', blue collar Lunchbox Joe shows real leadership in ppicking out the flavor of ice cream he eats.

Legacy media shows real hard hitting new coverage that matter by reporting on the flavor of Joe's ice cream. We live in the best of all possible worlds.

  2. Germany is eager to triangulate between Russia, China and the USA. Do big business with all as a trusted partner without the USA doing anything in reaction.

Will it work? Yes as long as no more America First presidents are elected. A President they can’t bribe is a President that will see Germany as the fake ally it has become.

  3. China has announced its way to dominate the world is through Europe first, and to own Europe, you gotta own Germany.
Ms Merkel hopefully is being watched. That lady barely qualifies as German, considering her many attempts to destroy that nation
