Defense One: Afghanistan is ‘Not a Winnable War,’ White House Says as Taliban Storms Country
President Ghani leaves Washington empty handed, as Biden rejects Republican calls to reverse U.S. troop withdrawal.
The conflict in Afghanistan—which the United States is preparing to hand over to the government in Kabul—is “not a winnable war,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Friday, dismissing Republican calls to reverse the withdrawal from the 20 year conflict hours before President Joe Biden met with his Afghan counterpart in Washington.
At the White House, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani capped a week of meetings, including with several members of Congress and defense officials at the Pentagon. After hearing Ghani talk about the security situation in his country, several Republican lawmakers asked Biden to reverse his decision to withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan no later than Sept. 11.The military is on track to complete the drawdown much sooner.

Update: White House: Afghanistan Is ‘Not a Winnable War’ (Antiwar.com)
WNU Editor: My gut is telling me that the Washington establishment knew a long time ago that this war in its current form was not winnable.
If Washington knows Afghanistan is not winnable, then why are Republican's trying to get Biden to stop the troop withdrawal. In a way, Biden is following through on what President Trump started. WHY do some Republicans want to stop this??
ReplyDeleteI feel so sad for you. Name the Republicans. They are probably RINOs. RINOS play like Democrats. Must suck to have the same hypocrisy right back at you.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Afghanistan was winnable, but we never fought Pakistan. So we were not going to win.
Problem with trying to win now is if there is a peer to peer war with China. Pakistan might throw their lot in with China and there would be no way for American troops to Anabasis their way out.
Of course if we allied with Russia, then American troops would not be surrounded on all sides, but the idiots of the Beltway see with the stomach.
Russia is ruled by an oligarchy and it is dirty. How clean are the hands of the Democrats? Allying with Russia now would be less distasteful than when we allied Stalin. Russia is not as bad now and the US is not as good. So if we could do it then, why not now? A war with China will be every but as terrible as with the NAZIs. So IMO we need allies.
Also before we go after Republicans lets go after Democrats first for telling lies about Trump for the last 2 years about Afghanistan.
China might just go to war with Afghanistan to prove Biden wrong.
