Top U.S. Admiral Says Russia's Flybys May Be Attempts At 'Baiting The U.S. To Shoot First'

Business Insider: Russia's risky flybys may be attempts at 'baiting us into shooting first,' top US admiral says

* Russian forces have had several close encounters with NATO militaries in the Black Sea.

* Those encounters come amid ongoing tensions following Moscow's 2014 seizure of Crimea.

* Those actions may be attempts to bait US and NATO forces, the top US admiral in Europe warned.

Aggressive Russian maneuvers around US and NATO forces in the Black Sea in recent weeks appear meant to provoke a response, the top US Navy admiral in Europe said on July 21.

NATO militaries conducted exercises in the Black Sea from mid-June to mid-July, the largest of which, Sea Breeze, involved 32 ships and 40 aircraft from 32 countries.

In the days before Sea Breeze began on June 28, Russian aircraft conducted what Western officials called unsafe flights around NATO warships in the Black Sea. Russian and NATO forces continued to operate near each other in the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea over the following weeks.

Update: Russia’s Increasing Aggression in Black Sea Region Disturbs U.S. Naval Commander (Seapower Magazine)

WNU Editor: You can take this to the bank. If the U.S. shoots, there will be a very quick reciprocal response from Russia.

  1. WNU,
I'm not that sure. Of course there will be a "strong" reaction, but the message will be very understood.

  2. Two can play that game. How would WNU feel if an American plane buzzed a Russian ship just as closely? What if the Russians fired first and then everything got glowy.

  3. Didn't work out so well in Syria a few years ago (Wagner Group). But back then we had an actual POTUS.

  4. You bank on this , the U.S won't shoot first , nor would they respond

  5. So what are our flybys then?

Both sides are simply running their routines and some bored journalist needed a headline for their quota.

  6. The admiral is intentionally omitting the situational context: NATO ships are deliberately entering or threathening to enter Russian waters in the Black Sea, and that is why they are having close encounters with Russian ships and aircraft.

  7. Russia has been taking loses for awhile, one example i recall is a Russian plane getting shot down by Syrian anti air after an Isreali jet used it as a wall.

Even in the US shot down a Russian plane, i doubt Russia will act. But shooting down a Russian plane shouldn't be something you want to do, Russia was a US allie in both world wars, if there is a 3rd, id still want Russia on my side.

  8. I would argue, Biden is a puppet to the Woman of the whitehouse, his vice, the chair. And one thing about woman is they create life, so taking it means nothing to them. Add in the NATO issue that has focused on the Russia threat its entire existance and the fact alot of Woman are running european countries we are arrive at a point in time where the west is controlled by very power group of woman. I think for a bunch of feminists, send me to die in a war, well we are at a very dangerious time in history where alot of people get sucked into thinking the human race is the problem. Think the whole worlds feeling the pressure about a shooting war.

  9. Russia handed over Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 and agreed for it to be Ukrainian in 1991. So the Russians agreed that Crimea belonged to Ukraine twice.

    1954 transfer of Crimea

So Russia is in the wrong here.

    Caecus MEANING

From Proto-Italic *kaikos (“blind, eyeless”), from Proto-Indo-European *káykos (“one-eyed”). Cognates include Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍃 (haihs), Old Irish cáech (“one-eyed”), caoch (“blind”).

Based on Wilsonian principles, I believe Crimea should go to Russia. You should not that 20% of Democrats hate Woodrow Wilson, so do not expect to adhere or believe in his 14 points. Wilson's 14 points were always selectively applied anyways.

Fun fact is that Democrats being the fascists they are rank Biden ahead of FDR. Not hard to figure out. Bunch of little goose steppers in the making.

IMO in Russia's favor besides Wilsonian principle are two facts. One Russia negotiated under duress in 1991. Two Crimea was handed over in 1954 in backroom deal making to get Kruschev the top job, which is a lousy reason.

Finally, as we saw this week, the centre of gravity has moved to a purely Trumpian account of January 6: the hearings are a partisan witch hunt; aside from a few probably implanted miscreants, those involved were true patriots. Many of these accounts coexist. Trump’s gentler apologists say that half the country has lost faith in the integrity of the US election system and their voices need to be heard too. Others say Biden is a traitor. They are all on the same bullet train that is heading for Mar-a-Lago.

The hardest to overlook are those that know better. John Stuart Mill said: “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends than that good men should look on and do nothing.” Republicans can count in their ranks a widening margin of unhinged actors, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, the QAnon populariser, who likened mask mandates to the yellow stars Jews were made to wear by Hitler; Paul Gosar, who says the US is in a civil war, “we just haven’t started shooting yet”; and Matt Gaetz, who is being investigated for possible underage sex trafficking.

You are not an honest person Lapides. Most of what you do is throw sand into the workings of honest debate.

You could have found the poll yourself. You could have kept up with the news instead of the new incarnation of Der Sturmer.

Or maybe you have, but you are just trying to gum up the works by pretending to be out of the loop, pathetic and hopeless.

Question: Is David A. a 3rd cousin, 2nd cousin, or closer? I want to know for academic purposes.

That is a serious charge. It is such a serious charge it should have gone to court, but has not in over a year. So the more time goes buy the more I call bullshit.

The charge is to try to get him to knuckle under or barring that to lose an election an election via innuendo.

There authorities are not serious about child prostitution. There are 300,000 child prostitutes in America. Oakland, California (a Democrat stronghold), is the acknowledged capital of child prostitution.

There is a huge amount of prostitution in border counties due to illegal immigration.

All in all, it leads me to believe that the Democrat Party is fine with child prostitution. I believe Democrats will legalize child prostitution in my life time.

  16. Barbarians who ransacked the Capitol on Jan. 6 called Aquilino Gonell a “traitor” and told him he’s “not even an American.” Those slanderous words wounded the Capitol Police sergeant, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, as badly as the pole someone attacked him and fellow officers with, which was flying a U.S. flag. But Gonell is a bigger patriot than Donald Trump and all the insurrectionists incited by the then-president — combined. He is the one who truly understands — and embodies — what makes America great.

Gonell and his mother arrived at JFK International Airport in New York from their Caribbean homeland in 1992. He swore oaths to protect and defend the Constitution when he signed up for the Army, became a U.S. citizen and joined the Capitol Police. The 43-year-old proved six months ago that he made these promises without reservation.

The sergeant was the first of four front-line law enforcement officers to appear Tuesday during the opening hearing of the House select committee to investigate the events of Jan. 6. His testimony felt like an antidote to xenophobia, Narcan for nativism. Anyone who fears the newest wave of immigrants would be reassured — even inspired — just by watching Gonell’s testimony.

As Americans by choice, many immigrants have a deeper sense of duty than the native-born. Ever since Alexis de Tocqueville so sagely observed our national character, outsiders and newcomers have often seen America’s strengths and weaknesses with the greatest clarity.

Three key witnesses during Trump’s first impeachment were immigrants. Marie Yovanovitch was born in Canada to parents who fled the Soviet Union. Alexander Vindman’s father brought him and his twin brother to Brooklyn from Ukraine, which was then behind the Iron Curtain. Fiona Hill is a coal miner’s daughter who grew up in northern England and caught a lucky break that put her on a path to Harvard.

All three have discussed how these backgrounds shaped their gratitude for the United States, allowing them to clearly see how un-American it was for Trump to shake down the Ukrainian government to advance his personal interests. They testified before Congress when other material witnesses declined to do so.

On Tuesday, Gonell joined their impressive ranks. He described experiencing hand-to-hand combat like “something from a medieval battle,” scarier than any of the 545 days he served in Iraq. The invaders, chanting “Trump sent us,” used hammers, knives, batons and shields. Gonell was punched, pushed, kicked, shoved and bear-sprayed.

  17. this is the link posted to prove what?

Note where the Dems are and then note TRUMP!! ho ho ho

Overall, ten presidents are popular with a majority of Americans. Aside from the aforementioned top five, this includes Dwight Eisenhower (58%), Franklin D. Roosevelt (58%), Barack Obama (54%), Ronald Reagan (54%) and Harry Truman (51%, although note this is within the margin of error of being less than a majority).

Joe Biden currently scores 47% on this measure, making him 11th overall. His predecessor Donald Trump lands much further down on the list, scoring 39% and ranking 20th.

  18. that child who posted (or tried to) a link (does not know enough to make a real link) attempts to show that the public (Dems) prefer Biden to Lincoln, when in fact what he (or she) shows, is that Trump ranks well below most of the contemporary presidents...He is a loser. A failed dolt. And you make a fool of yourself while trying to make others look dumb! LOSER
