UNITED NATIONS, Sept 21 (Reuters) - The Taliban have asked to address world leaders at the United Nations in New York this week and nominated their Doha-based spokesman Suhail Shaheen as Afghanistan's U.N. ambassador, according to a letter seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi made the request in a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday.

Muttaqi asked to speak during the annual high-level meeting of the General Assembly, which finishes on Monday. Guterres' spokesperson, Farhan Haq, confirmed Muttaqi's letter.

The move sets up a showdown with Ghulam Isaczai, the U.N. ambassador in New York representing Afghanistan's government ousted last month by the Taliban.

  1. They will hold the investigation to get someone from E6 to O5 to hang it on. We know it came form the White House, but the buck does not stop there. Maybe at O5 they were hedging words to curry favor, but by the time if got to O7 or higher they were bending over and doing back flips. It is what IU believe until I see otherwise.

  2. Well, why not? The UN is so irreparably broken that it likely makes no difference who they allow to speak about whatever, so long as there is some sort of anti-America message attached. Hell, at this point they should elect AOC as SecGen and stop pretending to be non-partisan. Or Hillary. Or Barak.
