Ukraine Demands The U.S. And Germany Impose Sanctions On Russian Natural Gas Giant Gazprom

Moscow Times: Ukraine Calls for Russia Sanctions Over Hungary Gas Deal

Ukraine said Friday it wants Germany and the United States to impose sanctions on Russia’s gas export monopoly Gazprom over its controversial deal with Hungary and Kiev’s loss of transit capacities.

Kiev slammed as “political” this week’s contract that will supply 4.5 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas to Hungary every year until 2036 through non-Ukrainian transit routes.

“Gazprom stopped gas transit through Ukraine to Hungary,” Yuri Vitrenko, the CEO of Ukraine’s pipeline operator Naftogaz, wrote on Facebook.

Update #1: Ukraine demands sanctions on Russia's Gazprom after Kyiv loses gas imports (Reuters)

WNU Editor: This is why Ukraine is upset .... Russia's new pipeline bypasses Ukraine in pumping gas to Europe, Kyiv says (Euronews).

But here is the kicker. I understand the transit fees that Gazprom is now paying through this new route are much lower than what Ukraine was demanding. To put it bluntly. Ukraine’s pipeline operator Naftogaz priced itself out of the market.

Update #2: The lost of transit fees will cost Ukraine $3 billion a year .... Russia can cut Ukraine out of new gas deal, Kiev’s energy czar says, as long as Moscow keeps handing over cash for transit rights (RT).

Update #3: Croatia is now also receiving Russian natural gas through this new route .... Apart From Hungary, Gazprom Begins to Supply Gas Via TurkStream to Croatia (Sputnik).

From what I recall over the years Ukraine was engaged in economic warfare with Russia over gas pipelines and delivery costs. I would say Russia has won this war.

This is laughable. the Kiev regime wants to cut itself off from everything Russian... except for those transit fees.

It appears to me as though the chump Ukrainian government is in a race perhaps with the US government to see just which one of them can be the stupidest on earth. The chump can demand all they want but the chump will get nowhere with Germany. It's simply not in German national interests to sanction Russia over this or anything else. In fact, the opposite is true. The German leadership class will likely want to jettison itself of the chump asap. As such, the Ukrainian government looks pretty silly demanding anything from Germany. Of course silly people do silly things!!

As for the US, I hold out hope that our country will return to a common sense America first foreign and domestic and essentially behave as normal countries do. At that point, geo political realities and the policies that optimize the benefits for America while minimizing costs and risks will be implemented. Essentially Ukraine carries huge costs combined with enormous risks and no benefit to the American people. Of course if one happens to be a Mitt Romney associate or Hunter Biden, the calculus is different. Essentially in my considered opinion they've sold out our country in the pursuit of personal gain.
