President Vladimir Putin has ordered 134,500 more conscripts to join his army as Russia's forces continue to struggle to make significant gains in Ukraine.
The Russian despot signed a decree today ordering the new conscripts into the army as part of Russia's annual spring draft.
Despite Moscow's struggles, the defence ministry claimed the call-up had nothing to do with the war in Ukraine.
The order came five weeks into Russia's invasion, which has run into fierce Ukrainian resistance that has inflicted devastating losses on Moscow's armies.

A draft in the USA is long overdue. Time to get more people invested in foreign policy.

ReplyDeleteSure.
This is the traditional conscription season. Raising up draftees for their 2 yr stint. But this season is seeing large numbers of draftees committing violent acts of self harm. Others are saying that they flat out won't go. To ensure that they do not deploy to Ukraine.

ReplyDeleteIf we drafted all able bodied men and women from 18 to 27 would be vets. Maybe not combat vets, but they would be vets. Regardless they would know a little bit more and their bullshit detectors would be a little better. It would make it harder on pols to lie about their service.
Yeah, and they might pay more attention to world affairs.
Someone told me that during the draft that there was a sizeable proportion of people, who did not want to be there and were more trouble than they were worth. That is they were negative manpower.
We do not draft in America unless we are at war and use the regular army for entanglements such as Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. My guess is you refer to national service and/or regular military service, as in a number of nations.
ReplyDeleteNational service is a pure and simple cop out.
