Are We At The Start Of An Infrastructure War Between The West And Russia?`

German Energy Minister Robert Habeck

DNYUZ/Newsweek: Germany Warns Key Infrastructure At Risk After Russia Pipeline ‘Sabotage’

Amid suspicion that the unexplained leaks involving two critical pipelines were caused by sabotage, Germany is warning that there could be future attacks on critical energy infrastructure.

On Tuesday, German Energy Minister Robert Habeck said that although he didn’t want to speculate on the leaks in Nord Stream 1 and 2, which run from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, other infrastructure, like nuclear plants, could be subject to attacks.

“Of course, critical infrastructure is a potential target. But we have known that not just since yesterday,” Habeck said at a press conference.

“This has been the basis of the work for months. And security authorities, agencies, this ministry and also the operators, of course, are doing their part to protect themselves, to protect the infrastructure and to ensure a secure energy supply.”

WNU editor: The Nord Stream pipeline attacks cost Russia $23 billion (if the pipelines are scrapped), and $1 billion in natural gas that was in the pipelines when the breaches occurred. This loss does not include the hundreds of billion in revenues that Moscow was suppose to receive if these pipelines were operational and natural gas was being delivered to Germany.

So where are we now?

In the past 24 hours Russia has become more vehement in their condemnation of these attacks, and while they are not saying it publicly, the Kremlin is convinced that Washington DC was behind this attack.

Will Russia retaliate?

If history is any indication the answer is yes. I am sure they already have a target in mind that will be just as big, and my gut tells me that it will be the undersea cables that much of the world's communications and internet traffic occur. The British are certainly worried about this .... Britain to acquire two specialist ships to protect underwater infrastructure (Reuters).

One other prediction. If Russian does retaliate, it will be after the US mid-term elections.
