Politico: Nuclear tensions on the Korean peninsula are accelerating dramatically
As the global security environment becomes more challenging, the need to adapt alliances increases as well.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has sent a nuclear shot across the bow, declaring earlier this month that if problems get worse, “our country will introduce tactical nuclear weapons or build them on our own.”
And his remark should send alarm bells ringing in Washington and allied capitals across Europe and Asia.
Yoon’s statement — which he emphasized didn’t constitute official policy — came in response to a highly belligerent speech by North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un in December. Already following a year in which North Korea tested more missiles of all ranges than in any previous 12-month period, Kim announced that Pyongyang would start “mass-production of tactical nuclear weapons,” leading to “an exponential increase of the country’s nuclear arsenal.” And few would be surprised if he decided to conduct a seventh nuclear weapons test this year.

WNU Editor: I am sure South Korea, if it wants, can build nuclear weapns very quickly. But this will contravene international law, break anti-proliferation treaties, and result in sanctions.
Update: With all the problems and crisis in the world, why is this US politician bringing this up .... US Navy Warship ‘Seized’ By North Korea During Intelligence Gathering Mission Must Be Returned: US Lawmaker (EurAsian Times).
With some people you have to get right back in their face, when they get in your face or they take it as weakness.
ReplyDeleteYes, now is the time to demand the ship back.
We should tell Kim John Un "Remember the Philadelphia". Yusuf Karamanli ruler of Tripoli was forced to sign a treaty. A more complete victory would have ensured, but Thomas Jefferson had to accede to Congress's whishes.
the only reason Kim Jong Un of the little leg is threatening is because he sees the US as weak and Russia as winning. Again you get back in his face or he will continue to see the US as weak.
"I am sure South Korea, if it wants, can build nuclear weapons very quickly. But this will contravene international law, break anti-proliferation treaties, and result in sanctions. "
ReplyDeleteThere would be no sanctions. The US and Japan would still trade with South Korea. Putin and Xi broke the international order. Putin took a big dump on it.
League of Nations
" It was founded on 10 January 1920 by the Paris Peace Conference that ended the First World War. The main organization ceased operations on 20 April 1946"
The UN is gone. It is operational and so seems to be living, but it is dead. Historians will date the end of the UN to Pootin's invasion of Ukraine.
The League of Nations operated all through WW2. Does anyone remember what it did? What decided the aftermath of WW2? League of Nations or Yalta?
No if South Korea builds a bomb so will Japan and both of them with tell Little Kim to sit down and shut up.
I said Sourh Korea would do this on a previous posting. Non-proliferation is dead to Biden and Obama. No way on earth Putin would have done his invasion with Trump. He and all our adversaries see a weak, compromosed and now a politically hurt president who lied about Secret documents. Blownback is fun to watch!
ReplyDeleteIf I was SK and Japan I'd start immediately developing tactical nukes. Even better move them to Taiwan to.
USA has no respect worldwide and is not feared by anyone anymore. Besides very weak and incompetent leaders, an assault on the USA as the reserve currency for the world, and the insane debt levels we're done.
bluster. No way Russia would have done this with Trump? You know this for sure?
ReplyDeleteName one--one time--Trump ever said a bad word to Putin! What would Trump had done: sent Americans to fight? or Putin was scared of Trump so would not have invaded. You are naive because of fondness for a guy who could not win a second term.
Kim is a great guy. Like his dad and Granddad, Totally misunderstood.
ReplyDeleteYou can bet your ass that they already have nukes, at least under a sharing program.. I'd easily believe 10-20 nukes..
ReplyDeleteIsrael too, of course - and no "bans" or "penalties" for them. Of course.
Why? Probably because he knows the American people hate North Korea, (they really do) therefore he is trying to satisfy his electorate.
ReplyDeleteA saying in conservative circles is that a Republican has to win by a margin greater than that of cheating.
ReplyDeleteWe figured that the margin of cheating was 50,ooo to 70,0000 per state. We were so wrong.
Trump did win, but not greater than the margin of cheating.
