Russia’s TOBOL EW System “Cuts Off” Starlink From It’s Ground Terminals In Ukraine

Washington Post: Russia tests secretive weapon to target SpaceX’s Starlink in Ukraine

Russia’s quest to sabotage Ukrainian forces’ internet access by targeting the Starlink satellite operations that billionaire Elon Musk has provided to Kyiv since the war’s earliest days appears to be more advanced than previously known, according to a classified U.S. intelligence report obtained by The Washington Post.

Moscow has experimented for months with its Tobol electronic warfare systems in a bid to disrupt Starlink’s transmissions in Ukraine, the top-secret assessment, which has not been previously disclosed, contends.

WNU Editor: In the past few weeks I have been reading reports from the Ukrainian side that their forces were having problems with Starlink. This report confirms it.

  1. Action and counter action is what war is all about so no surprise. The question that matters is what will SpaceX do? Counter act Russia or not?

  2. I don't know if Starlink ever signed up to be a weapons platform let alone wage an arms race with state actors. The company figurehead just got pressured into providing a few thousand base stations, which was good PR for him and really good advertising for the product. Just because their product is (was) the only one capable of operating up close to the frontlines doesn't mean that Starlink wants to market itself as a military platform, one of their customers has simply seen success doing so.

Engaging in a very costly rat race against Russia and China is at odds with their private profit motive. Unless Uncle Sam wants to start footing the bill I can't see why Starlink would really care whether or not their base stations work within 100 miles of an active war zone. Cell phones don't work inside a TOBOL field either, but you don't see Apple worried about it because they're not trying to create a product that defeats EW systems in the first place.

Tesla isn't going to develop a tank because the Model S can't drive around Bakhmut right now. Not without government cash, anyway.
