US General Says Russian Ground Forces ‘Bigger Today’ Than At Start Of The War In Ukraine

Recruits hold their weapons during military training at a firing range in the Krasnodar region in southern Russia in October 2022.

CNN: Russian ground forces ‘bigger today’ than at start of the war in Ukraine, US general says

While Russia has suffered thousands of losses in its war against Ukraine, a senior US military commander in Europe told lawmakers Wednesday that they have plenty more firepower left in their arsenal.

“[T]he Russian ground force has been degenerated somewhat by this conflict, although it is bigger today than it was at the beginning of the conflict,” Gen. Christopher Cavoli, the commander of US European Command, told the House Armed Services Committee.

“The Air Force has lost very little, they’ve lost 80 planes. They have another 1,000 fighters and fighter bombers,” he said. “The Navy has lost one ship.”

Classified military documents allegedly leaked by a junior enlisted National Guard airman for months gave a snapshot of where Russia’s ground forces were committed in the war. One document, dated February and March, said that 527 of 544 of available Russian battalions have been committed to the war against Ukraine; 474 of them are already in the country, the intelligence said.

WNU Editor: The Russian sources that I follow say that there are about 500,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine, and another 250,000 near its border. The Ukraine sources that I follow say that the upcoming Ukraine counter-offensive will involve up to 40,000 soldiers .... others say 80,000.

How can such a counter-offensive succeed?

  1. I don’t see how this ends without western regular forces entering western Ukraine, And only god knows where it goes from there.

  4. Gee Fazzy. I thought you and Chris said 3 months ago that the Russians had no tanks.

That the Air Force was in heaps and the Russians had no men left?

How is that narrative working for you?

  6. We are going to lose the Ukraine war as we did the botched Afghanistan retreat. All of that from the same strategic mistake: being afraid of ground confrontation....even Putin said during more than 20 years that making war with NATO is suicidal. It would take to put few troops i Ukraine for making Putin not invading Ukraine.
Don't worry we are going to lose the Taiwan war and the freedom of America to China.

  8. Fazman,

Unlike the Schweinfurt Raid and Black Thursday, the Russians found out they like high quality ball bearings. China cannot supply these for Russia or itself. So China is adhering to sanctions for now. Making home grown high quality ball bearings is on China's checklist.

So WNU may brag about Russia being on a war footing, but they do not have the right ball bearings and so no great number of new tanks. so they use the old ones.

Russia is low on tanks so they sent the T55s and T14s (not too many of those)

they are also low it seems on trained artillery men, tankers or ammo. They moved a large vehicle park form North Crimea to somewhere safer. Without a good vehicle destroyed headcount it is hard to estimate each sides casualties.

Joe will pack it in Ukraine if he thinks the media and the establishment will cover for him and he can still count on vote bundlers on election season.

Why? Joe is simply not a fighter unless it is the political spoils system. It is not in him to risk his soft white hiney.

I cannot believe that 8:57 AM (Fred or Fred copycat) went after Ron of all people. Some serious trolling or stupidity going on there.

    1. Can’t tell if joking or actually believes that Russia can’t just buy ball bearings at a 10% markup…

  9. Well, golly gee 12:46, for now I believe my source. I believe them 1005 with a 10% discount. I am big into meta data. I know what I read and form whom. If It get burned, I know who to blame (myself included).

But I do note that while WNU gooses us with tales of massive Soviet tank production, T-62s. T-55s and now T-14s are now at the front. So maybe tat great Soviet tank production isn't all it is cracked up to be. That is my second reference point.

    Time will tell.
