Has Putin Decided To Use Nuclear Weapons?

Kevin Ryan, UnHerd: Why Putin will use nuclear weapons

All the signs suggest Russia has made up its mind

However you try to spin it, the drone strikes that struck Moscow’s wealthiest neighbourhoods on Tuesday night represented a grim turning point in Putin’s flagging campaign against Ukraine. The surprise attacks — which killed eight people, and for which Kyiv has denied all responsibility — were the first against Russian civilians since the war began. They were also the most significant incursion into Russian territory since the Second World War.

Putin was quick to brand the strikes a “terrorist” act, while a rattled Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenaries, gave war chiefs a dressing-down for their inability to prevent three of eight drones from evading Russian air defences. Yet while this all provided a morale boost for the Ukrainian war effort, the question of retaliation hangs in the air.

Update: In Ukraine, Russia is nearly down to its nukes (Jonathan Sweet and Mark Toth, The Hill)

WNU Editor: The two commentaries above firmly believe that Russia's army is failing, and that Putin's only salvation is using nuclear weapons.

I disagree.

What I see is a Russian army focused on conducting a war of attrition, using its advantages in air superiority and firepower to degrade and bleed what is left of the Ukraine army.

  2. The russian strategy now is to hold on. Until China goes for Taiwan. If the first battles of that war are incredibly bloody for the US out of desperation and to not seem weak the US will pull out everything it has in Europe and stop any funding for Ukraine. The US cannot support two major wars at the same time and avoid bankruptcy. Real bankruptcy not the mild variant. So if China goe for Taiwan hard choices will be made.Alternatively a war with Iran. But that's touch and go. The US might be able to support one big war and one medium sized one. Other good scenarios Indo-Pak nuke war or North Korea starts a war. But these are less likely. Something's gotta give somewhere. The russians know it and their strategy hinges on holding on until it happens.

    2. 4:06 you have cinematic imagination. Love movies, do you?

    3. You don't need to watch movies in order to understand basic human nature. This is basic stuff that a 6th grader can figure out if they apply logic. If you need actual briefings to get it then you're beyond help. Oh wait I forgot human nature escapes most humans since they lack an understanding of how people act. Unless you spoon feed them everything they'll ask questions like 'why did the chicken cross the road' unironically. This is basic logic that anyone with a map can figure out. Why are you people so dense?

    4. Kind of embarrassing the Russians are hanging on. The west feared the Russians for decades.

  8. It is safer for ztupid pootin not to use nukes. NATO is already lock and loaded at his doorstep. Before those nuke leave silos they will all.burn

  9. This is the new cope. The new reason why NATO has to disengage from Ukraine. “We beat the Russians so badly that now they have nothing left except nukes, so we’re going to back off because we’re the sane rational actors here.”

  11. WNU: Russia has "air superiority"

Huh? You might need to look up what "air superiority" means.

WNU: "what is left of the Ukrainian army"

Again — huh? Ukraine has 86 brigades on the front lines, plus a strike force set aside for the counteroffensive comprising 35 combat brigades and a bunch of other units.

Ukraine's army is now stronger than it has ever been. Not to mention the fact that F-16s will be in country in September.

    1. Exactly, what air superiority? Russia can't bring its airforce to bare due to sams.
Looks like 40 Australian FA18 super hornets are soon there also

  12. You two are idiots. You look at a lake and say its an ocean because you cannot see the other side.
Note the Russian air force still exists and has plenty of planes. If they choose not to use them then that is thier issue. I guess they figure it is cheaper to use a 5000 dollar dumb glide bond or a 500 dollar arty shell than to risk a multi million dollar air plane. Did not Milley say two weeks ago that the ruskies have over 1000 of them. Mostly gen 4s.

The ukie army is stonger than it has ever been before? Really? Guess you missed the previous article from WOR where 2 American former special forces advisors say the ukie army is a disjointed cluster. Yea, better thsn ever.
The counter offensive will not go well.

Why? The curse of the Fazman Rule. It is karmaic in nature.
