Statista: Ukrainians' Desire to Join NATO and the EU
NATO foreign ministers are meeting in Oslo today. Ahead of the session, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Sweden and urged Turkey and Hungary to ratify the Nordic country's membership in the organization. The bigger elephant in the room during the meeting will be another nation's membership prospects: those of Ukraine. While the country is not expected to join immediately, the question of what NATO can offer Ukraine right now will be posed during the meeting. Ukrainians' desire to join the treaty (and the EU) is higher than ever after some hesitation, a survey from the country's Rating Sociological Group shows.

WNU Editor: This is nothing new. Western Ukraine support for joining the EU and NATO has always been strong. It was one of the main reason why the 2014 Maiden Revolution occurred. When then Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych signed an agreement with Russian President Putin for closer ties, those who favored closer ties to the West revolted.
As for eastern Ukraine, for as long as I can remember the sentiment has always been the opposite. And this war has now only hardened both sides where reconciliation is now impossible.
NATO the devil's in man
ReplyDeleteHere’s an idea, split the country into two, right down Dnipro
ReplyDeleteHere's an idea, split russia among the mongol, turkish, finnish, russian and other parts.
ReplyDeleteWNU Editor has a strange way of looking at things.
ReplyDeleteFirst, while joining NATO has traditionally been something relegated to western Ukraine, support for the EU has been considerable for a while. The only reason Yanukovych won the 2010 election was that he ran on the platform of signing the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement which he did in 2012. While support was higher in the western half of Ukraine than the east, there was broad agreement. All the political parties in the Rada except the Communist party were in favor. The issue wasn't that Ukrainians didn't want it. The issue is that Putin didn't want because that would thwart his plans to turn Ukraine in a vassal state. That was when Putin had secret meetings and phone calls with Yanukovych which caused him to suddenly withdraw from signing at the last minute. Then he immediately started pushing Putin's Customs Union plan (despite that negotiations with the EU took years, if Putin wanted his Customs Union then things like negotiations weren't needed). That was what caused Euromaidan - the Ukrainian people did not want the Russian president deciding and vetoing what Ukraine could do. And while western Ukrainians were the most motivated during Euromaidan, there was enormous support in the central, southern, and even eastern portion.
Second, when the level of support is now somewhere between 80-100%, you cannot plausibly claim "war has now only hardened both sides where reconciliation is now impossible". It is pretty obvious there has been reconciliation. Ukrainians of all ethnicities and languages now overwhelming support Ukrainian participation in Western institutions. Those Ukrainians who are against are an insignificant political minority. This is no longer about Ukrainians being divided. They are united. The war is about Russia willing to kill in order to prevent Ukraine from doing what it wants.
Third, while historically Ukrainians who wanted to join NATO were a small minority, the same dynamics have taken place there. Support for NATO, something once only pushed by a minority in western Ukraine is now almost equal to support for EU membership. The historical support before Euromaidan was between 20-30%, and after Euromaidan only increased to 40-60%. Now it is 80-90%. This is truly amazing, and once again it is all due to Putin and Russia's aggression.
So it isn't true that "this is nothing new". The incredible turn of eastern Ukrainians to support not only the EU (to record levels) and NATO is very much new. Putin's invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and ongoing Russian aggression has transformed Ukraine. The old divisions that once existed are no longer there. WNU Editor is simply stuck in the past.
Chris
Chris — you are spot on. Whatever shreds of pro-Russian sentiment may have existed in eastern Ukraine was totally erased after Russia’s Feb. 2022 invasion. It is the eastern part of the country that has by far suffered the worst. Civilians in cities like Mariupol and Kharkiv, places that held some nostalgia for the days of closer Russian ties, suffered the worst of Russia’s barbarism. Now the civilian population in eastern Ukraine is uniformly antagonistic toward Russia and grateful for Western aid. Recent polls show that national support for the war effort, and a rejection of making terms with Moscow, is constant across all regions of Ukraine. By every quantitative metric, Ukraine is more unified than it has ever been, and Russia has no path toward achieving its political objectives in Ukraine.
ReplyDeleteYeah that’s why so many are fighting with Moscow and not against. Try again
DeleteChris is wrong.
ReplyDeleteYou version of history is abysmally sick and warped.
Maiden was a color revolution formented by the NED and the US government. Nulland herself admitted that the US spent over 5 Billion dollars to sway public opinion in the Ukraine. With a population of about 40mil that is a huge amount. About a 1000 dollars per person.
When the Russians and the EU offered the Ukies a partnership. The Russians offered a better deal. That is the bottom line.
Yanukovych chose the better deal.
But the US was ready with nuland's guiding hand. Or are you denying "Yats is our man and FU the EU"?
And one can only wonder how many payments and bribes went to the Ukrainian congress.
Then the propaganda war started and the ethnic cleansing against Russian, culture, language and people. That is why the Donbass broke off and no one resisted in the Crimea.
But where do you get this bullshit polling data or did you make it up at one of your strategy meetings?
Maybe you got it from the ukie government, oh yea, they are great purveyors of the truth. Your numbers are fairy tales.
You suck.
You are a pro ukie shrill who twists history to fit your Blob narrative. A lot of people have died because of jerks like you. It is your neon ilk that: poisoned ukie minds, bought off their politicians and got them into an unneeded war.
All to satisfy your own hate and ego.
You are a dement ideologue who spews a poison wrapped in fine garments, to satisfy your blob masters.
Do not pay much attention to chris. He says all kinds of things and like they very much do not come true. He is kinda trapped in his own world.
ReplyDeleteWow, that was ugly.
ReplyDeleteBut not off the point. Secret talks with Putin? Maybe, but no proof provided. Did someone have tapes of the conversations or are we just guessing here?
But on the other hand, bet you a lot of "secret talks" were going on between the US embassy and the Ukie government and the "spontaneous demonstrator leadership". Those organizations had received lots of training and money from the west though the color revolution mechanism.
Did not the STRATFOR guy say this was one of the most blatant Coups ever?

Nice re-write of history on that one..
a fresh cup of coffee, small cubical, notes from their little team meeting, a selection of topics to address for the day, and it is propaganda narrative time.
