Warzone: Russia Is Using Tires To Protect Its Bombers From Aerial Attack
Arranging surplus tires atop Russian bombers is likely a highly makeshift countermeasure used to thwart Ukrainian long-range missile strikes.
Recent satellite imagery reveals more details of the unique measures Russia has taken in hopes of protecting its long-range bombers against Ukrainian attacks. The War Zone was first to spot the strange coverings atop a couple of its bombers in late August, but it wasn't clear exactly what they were made of at that time.
Now we can definitively say that Russia is placing tires on the upper surfaces of the aircraft in various patterns. As we have explored in the past, the timing of this move, coming immediately after the announcement that Ukraine has modified its Neptune anti-ship cruise missile to hit targets on land, strongly suggests that the tires are intended to confuse incoming missiles’ targeting systems.

I dont know how often they use these planes, but that shit is time consuming. I bet the service crews loves dragging those tires up and down the wings.
ReplyDeleteThey really have confidence in their CIWS ..not
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much of a FOD hazard they are creating, not that I mind.
ReplyDeletePlus, what Hans said/
Plus it increases cycle time.
I think it works something like sandbags on an M113. Sandbags I think would prevent spalling caused by machineguns. Not sure if they would defeat some of the anti armor rounds out there.
I think this is wishful thinking and about as useful as turret cage armour against javelins

ReplyDeleteMaybe the tires do nothing. We shall see.
Depending on the ability for command and control of the drone, the ordinance could be dropped eight thru the center of a tire.
Something is fishy with this whole thing.
ReplyDeleteInstead of flying them away to safety, or at least try to hide them a little, they just let them hang there on the open field. Tires...? Ok dude.
yep 🐟 🐠
