A Change Of Leadership At Missile Defense Agency
A major change of command is underway today. Air Force Lt. Gen. Henry Obering, who headed the Missile Defense Agency since 2004, is passing the baton to his successor, Army Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly.
During his tenure at MDA, Obering oversaw the first "operational" test of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system in 2006. While critics have questioned the realism of such tests, Obering's term marked a shift in missile defense from a development effort to an operational posture. Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld put the ground-based system on full alert in June 2006 as the North Koreans prepared for a ballistic missile launch test.

My Comment: Many are speculating on how much President Obama will cut Missile Defense .... my guess is that it is going to be deep. The financial crisis and his government priorities will slash this program deeply .... but will this be the right move?
If this program is not cut, this will tell me that missile defense is a far more effective program than what its critics are saying. I guess we will find out in the next year.
