President-elect Obama's expected selection of Robert Gates as his defense secretary and retired Gen. Jim Jones as his national security adviser is raising eyebrows among liberals.

My Comment: It appears that a number of Obama supporters prefer ideological leanings over job competence in filling important roles in the military/intelligence departments. President-elect Obama has other ideas.

I am an independent who enthusiastically voted for Obama. I also enthusiastically endorse his retention of Gates as Sec. of Defense. Gates has brought a fresh and highly pragmatic perspective to the position, executing decisions targeting the right course for the military today in lieu of succumbing to the intense pressures of tradition and entrenched ideals. Any Democrat or liberal opposing him simply because he's a Bush carry-over is guilty of the same blind partisanship that has led to so many of our current woes. Obama's retention of Gates was one of the earliest signs that I voted for a president who would put the best interests of the country over superficial party politics.
