Tamil Tiger Rebels Mount Suicide Bomb Attack On Sri Lankan Capital -- Times Online
A suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bomber killed eight people at a military base in Colombo yesterday as government troops continued to mount an offensive on the rebels' jungle headquarters in the north of the country.
Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, a spokesman for the Sri Lankan Army, said the suicide strike, the first on Sri Lanka's capital in nearly three months, underscored the mounting desperation of the rebels, who, he said, had recently lost large amounts of territory and men in the north.
The bomber made his way past a first checkpoint at a base used by the Civil Defence Force near a crowded market in Wattala, a suburb of Colombo, according to police. Seven security force personnel and one civilian died in the blast.
Soon afterwards government officials said air force jets had bombed rebel positions around Kilinochchi, the site of the Tigers' main base, about 210 miles (340km) north of Colombo.
