We keep being told Yemen is the new Afghanistan, in that it has the markings of a failed-state-to-be in which al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups will flourish.
It is an easy comparison and as far as I can see a pointless and even self-defeating one.
A journalist – not a specialist, but he makes some good points nevertheless – describes rather well the glibness of the comparison in the Guardian today, saying it makes it sound as if terrorists choose their bases like fashionistas choose this autumn’s colour.
