In a revealing letter written by Manfred Rommel, he tells of his father's last moments after he was ordered to commit suicide by Adolf Hitler.
His father explained to him he had to poison himself after being implicated in a plot to assassinate the Nazi dictator.

My Comment: I am not shedding any tears for the death of Rommel. My background is Russian, and I know too well what the German Nazis and their Generals did in the former Soviet Union during the Second World War .... as far as I am concerned, Rommel got off easy.

Good thing the Soviet leader and generals was saints then. There is a difference between wehrmacht and nazi generals, Rommel was a regular wehrmacht general. If you even bother reading up on stuff you might have read this on wiki: "Rommel is regarded as having been a humane and professional officer. His Afrikakorps was never accused of war crimes. Soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have been treated humanely. Furthermore, he ignored orders to kill captured commandos, Jewish soldiers and civilians in all theaters of his command."

Stalin and his generals were definitely not saints. But there is a difference when it comes to how you are treated by your own people, or by foreigners. I never forget what my father once told me, Stalin was horrific .... but having foreigners invade the country was worse and unacceptable for the mass majority of Soviet citizens.
As for Rommel, he had no illusions on who Hitler was, but he still willingly accepted promotions and the position of Field Marshal that Hitler personally gave him. He could have declined but he did not, and by not declining he willingly became a participant in a regime that was committing war crimes on an unprecedented level.

As to what's my take .... as I said I have no tears for Rommel .... my tears are for the victims of the regime that he so willingly supported for much of his military career.
