The news that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is set to step down creates an opening for the top job at the Pentagon.

The secretary of defense post will be a crucial post to fill in President Barack Obama‘s final two in office — with the international military campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria intensifying and Mr. Obama likely to focus more attention on foreign policy and international issues in his final two years.

Ashton Carter has a lot of respect among the Republicans in Congress. He's a budget and numbers man. If you promote Flournoy to #2 and put Carter as SecDef, you have an excellent team to manage the next rounds of budget cuts that are certainly coming...

I read Flournoy favors a less aggressive foreign policy. Would she be able to rein in the mission creep that has us stretched across the globe? Or is CIC dedicated to a maximalist foreign policy?
