Pakistan's Nuclear Arsenal Is Becoming One Of The Biggest International Security Challenges For 2016

Business Insider: Here's the biggest international security challenge of 2016 that nobody is talking about

The year ahead will bring no shortage of international issues that will keep the US and its partners occupied, ranging from the fight against ISIS to the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement.

But there's been another serious impending crisis building in the background — one involving terrorism, nuclear weapons, interstate power politics, and an important US ally.

The crisis isn't likely to explode in 2016. Its eruption is currently far from inevitable. But there's a good chance, depending on what happens in 2016, that it could become more likely.

  1. Is smuggling a bomb into the U.S. hard?

Obama famously pulled back the border patrol 75 miles back from the border.

“The president was not even aware that his border patrol was back 40 or 45 miles from the border at these checkpoints,”

  2. Terrorism to be successful requires journalists to write scary stuff designed to make people afraid, very afraid. In this case it starts with old news published in 2009 embellished with a modern twist involving ISIS. Personally I'll go with something from seven months ago:
WNU Editor: I am skeptical of such a claim. I suspect that Pakistani nuclear safeguards are extensive, and that the consequences of such a sale would be more devastating to Pakistan than to the Islamic State.

  3. Does anybody have any thoughts about what it will happen if the Islamic state will indeed detonate a nuclear weapon in the United States?.

    1. Not gonna happen.

Nuclear weapons are the "Crown Jewels" of the Nation State and are secured as such. While some States might sell nuclear technology, they won't sell either the weapons or the enriched materials.

Nuclear Weapons are designed to be delivered by gravity bombs or missiles, have layered levels of safe guards, are designed to be point zero safe, and are supposed to dentonate at the right altitude to cause maximum destruction.

( other than the U.S. and USSR's nuclear demolition charges( so called suitcase bombs), Davy Crocketts and Nuclear landmines, all of which have been decommissioned),

So to turn a missile warhead into a terrorist bomb will require a sophisticated knowledge of electronics, and a complete rewiring of the dentonation circuits, something few Nation States could manage.

Lastly, nuclear weapons are "hot", so, you either need containment facilities with extensive robotics to make the mods, or rotating teams of highly trained experts willing to die for the cause by working unshielded. Then, somehow, you have to smuggle this "hot box" from the working site to the target site, with out triggering any of the hundreds of radiological detectors along the route.

Non Nation State nuclear terrorism is a good plotline for a fantastical thriller novel or film, but the fact that Officials and the MSM are "pushing it" as even a "remote" possibility, tips their hands as to how much fear "they" are selling.
