Anna Mulrine, CSM: Why NATO says it's time to stop hugging the Russian bear
After the cold war, America hoped that European security was permanently solved, but Russia's recent forays into Ukraine and Syria have been followed by a shift in US rhetoric.
WASHINGTON — In little-noticed remarks this week, NATO’s supreme allied commander, US Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, said that for too long, the United States has “hugged the bear” of Russia. But now, he said, it’s time to get tough.
This toughness should come in the form of more US troops to Europe, he said, and more “high end” training to prepare American forces for a potential battle against the former cold war foe.
The remarks, made while Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was visiting Europe this week, have struck some as a bit alarmist. True, Russia has invaded Crimea and used agents provocateurs, covert operations, and even some of its own Red Army forces in Ukraine.

Update: U.S. General: We Have ‘Hugged’ the Russian Bear for Too Long (Washington Free Beacon)
WNU Editor: I am not impressed by General Breedlove's remarks. To make a difference .... the US would need to deploy a large number of brigades, squadrons, personnel, assets, etc. to Europe .... a deployment that is not going to happen because of limitation of funds and resources. I see his remarks more as an attempt to make sure that his budgets and resources are not diverted to the other commanders who have equally pressing needs .... especially to the conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan. General Breedlove is also going against the sentiment of many European nations .... who have no interest or desire to go back to the days of the Cold War .... even if this version is a miniature one.

Breedlove is the guy who thinks he saw Russian tank columns entering Ukraine, but he's a general who is expected to say these things so what can we expect.
"I didn't fire him [General MacArthur] because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was, but that's not against the law for generals. If it was, half to three quarters of them would be in jail." -- Harry S Truman
There were columns of russian tanks entering ukraine territority ukranian tankers can attest to that.
fazman,
"There were columns of russian tanks entering ukraine territority ukranian tankers can attest to that."
They were all on a vacation junket to the Black Sea, where they had Dachas.
Well, "Ukrainian" tankers don't give most reliable testimony,
After all, they claimed they would drive the Federalists out in the first week, and be in Moscow in the second week.
NATO and the US have a history of making "claims", and when challenged, refuse to produce the "evidence". They are still running on a "trust me", model as if Colin Powell had never made the presentation at the UN.
As we have seen with the ISIS Oil Convoys, or the SU-27 shoot down, Russia has become much better at the "show me" part that the US/NATO, and it's more and more, having a large impact.
What's the line from Shooter?
Oh yeah,
" They also said that artificial sweeteners were safe, WMDs were in Iraq and Anna Nicole married for love."
