VOA: US, China Remain Divided Over North Korea Nuclear Test Sanctions

BEIJING — The United States and China have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that North Korea ends its nuclear-weapons program, but high-level talks Wednesday showed that Beijing and Washington disagree on how to answer North Korea’s recent nuclear test, with either penalties or other signals of disapproval.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met for more than five hours in the Chinese capital - much longer than scheduled. The Chinese official said afterwards that his country is prepared to support a new U.N. resolution opposing Pyongyang’s nuclear program, but he did not discuss any specific penalties, and said any international action against the North should not provoke new tensions.
