Slate: Russian Spies Apparently Killed a U.S. Diplomat’s Dog
There's a column in the Washington Post on Monday about Russian harassment of U.S. diplomats in Moscow and other European capitals. One of the episodes described is particularly disturbing:
In the first term of the Obama administration, Russian intelligence personnel broke into the house of the U.S. defense attache in Moscow and killed his dog, according to multiple former officials who read the intelligence reports.
The Post's Josh Rogin writes that harassment has gotten more common since the Ukrainian civil/proxy war began in 2014. Among the other invasive/creepy tactics mentioned:
* "following diplomats or their family members"
* "showing up at social events uninvited"
* breaking into homes and rearranging furniture
Also, "one diplomat reported that an intruder had defecated on his living room carpet."

WNU Editor: I do not know what is happening now, but when I was a diplomat I was warned to be careful that these situations may arise. During my service I heard many stories .... from all sides .... but no one bothered me (the virtue of me being low-key). The worst case of harassment that I ever saw was the Canadian RCMP's treatment of the Iraqi ambassador at the ICAO mission in Montreal on Day One of the first Gulf War. The Iraqis decided to close their office and move to their Ottawa embassy .... but the RCMP guarding ICAO had other ideas. It all ended well .... but it was touch and go and it was only resolved when someone in Ottawa told the RCMP back-off .... my guess it was then Canadian Foreign Minister (and former Canadian Prime Minister) Joe Clark.
