Reuters: China says has defeated 'conspiracy' to stir up South China Sea trouble
China's success at turning around relations with the Philippines under its new president Rodrigo Duterte show the "conspiracies" of certain countries to stir up trouble in the South China Sea have been defeated, China's foreign minister said on Saturday.
In July, the Philippines won a case at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague challenging China's sovereignty claims in the South China Sea, which infuriated China.
But Duterte has sought to turn foe to friend, visiting Beijing in October, largely putting aside the dispute.

Somehow they remind me of the Romulan mentality from Star Trek .
HB: in Star Trek ultimately the Romulans failed. I'm not as opptimistic that China is going to fail. After all China is the second most powerful country on earth behind only Russia.
Clearly our trade agreements with China that are woefully one-sided against America need to be renegotiated and it's going to take some time for America to transition away from "made in China." Chinese cooprration and assistance here would be extremely helpful and perhaps even critical.
In this light, how wise was this to take any kind of call from the Taiwanese president and how wise was he to make the call? If Mr. Trump has now become an ideologue as opposed to a pragmatist, not good. Many voted for him based upon pragmatism.
A better approach might have been to publically recognize Tawain as an integral part of China, cut off all military sales to Tawain, agree to do all it can to punish anyone who sells military equipment to Tawain imposing US sanctions on Tawain as necessary to get this done, and publically point out that the Taiwanese government is illegal and illegitimate as Taiwan is a Chinese province.
Additionally the US should probably accept China's position in the South China Sea. After all there's nothing the US can do to change it. In exchange, China might agree to renegotiate the curfent trade agreements and even offer tbeir assistance on this. They are expert manufacturers. We aren't.
If one wants to be the best, study the best and learn. The Russians and the Chinese are the best right now and will be for the foreseeable future.
