WNU Editor: 25 years .... wow .... how time flies. When I think of how life was in the Soviet Union .... and now .... what life is like today. Sighhh .... I am just shaking my head .... the memories are too many. That is why if given a choice .... I would rather live in the new Russia of today in a heart-beat .... warts and all .... because it is infinitely far better than what it was then. As to those Russians who long for those days .... I know only too well who these people are ....they are those who miss the days when they had privilege and power .... and cannot understand what happened to it all. And as for the young who have a romantic view of those days .... I just break up laughing when I talk to them .... they have no f____ing clue.

Every country has its own history with its own "view" of it. I don't know about the Russian one but I know about the French one: 1789 revolution is highly celebrated in France even it was an horrible blood bath and for ....nothing! The real revolution came later silently and not noticeable. That's how the humanity is...we have to deal with it.

ReplyDeleteAs I recall, you've said something to the effect that you "never want to buy that t'shirt again." Most Americans never believed we had any hope of out lasting the Soviet Union. In fact, we built a vibrant economy in large part to extend a "middle finger" to the Soviet Union before it actually conquered us. After all go down fighting!!
No one seriously thought we could win. Then along came Ronald Reagan. Most of us thought he was nuts and most were absolutely terrified but after the fiasco of Carter we were willing to give him a chance. Lo and behold we won the lottery!! The Soviet Union was gone!! The odds against such were ridiculously enormous.
Now we are in Cold War 2. The differences between the nations are even more lopsided in favor of Russia now than in Cold War 1. Perhaps the "deal maker" can negotiate us out of this.
