Wall Street Journal: Donald Trump Says U.S. and EU Will ‘Resolve’ Steel, Aluminum Tariffs

President declares ‘new phase’ in U.S.-EU relations.

President Trump on Wednesday declared a “new phase” in the relationship between the U.S. and the European Union, agreeing to hold off on proposed car tariffs and work with the EU to resolve their dispute over metals duties, while also promoting bilateral trade.

Speaking in the Rose Garden of the White House alongside European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Mr. Trump said the U.S. and the EU had agreed to “work together toward zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsidies on non auto-industrial goods.”

“This was a very big day for free and fair trade,” Mr. Trump said. He said the U.S. and EU would “resolve” the steel and aluminum tariffs he imposed earlier this year and the retaliatory tariffs the EU imposed in response.

WNU Editor: If true, this is a huge win for the U.S. President. I am also surprised that the EU's resistance to President Trump's demands were mild .... from what I am reading they made some major concessions.

  1. A measure of a great man is overcoming the opposition of his enemies and his allies to achieve his objectives. Trumps win today is impressive as DC republicans joined with the Dems in opposition to his EU policies for many months and used their positions to rally the country against him.

Theses pigmy’s can’t help but make Trump look good simply by contrast.

  3. Easy win: European was knowing there is no other way. This because they send Junker who is drunk between 12:00 AM and 11:59 PM. That's just saving face.

  4. There was a message to both China and Russia. Trump focused on China (the 12bn he announced earlier and the soy bean purchases from the EU will help his farmers)..and Juncker mentioned the EU will buy more energy from the US -- which will be of major consequence to Russia.

  5. "New phase in EU-US relations, does this mean that the Euros are now going to respect us and treat us equals? I'm not holding my breath here.

As far as messages being sent to certain interested parties, wasn't Iran planning on using the EU against the US? Wasn't China looking for support against the US in their own trade disputes? If the Euros are going to buy more energy supplies from the US at the expense of Russia this would be a good thing as well.

Not so long ago prominent Euro politician Donald Tusk all but declared president Trump an enemy. By extension he declared all who voted for Trump as his enemy and by further extension when you declare the legitimate leader of a sovergin country your enemy you declare that country to be your enemy and you an enemy of them. For the Euros to have made such a drastic turnaround and to have conceded anything to the Americans, is indeed drastic.
