U.K. Unveils Its Newest Fighter Jet To Be Known As The Tempest

The Guardian: UK unveils new Tempest fighter jet to replace Typhoon

Government to spend £2bn to develop aircraft between now and 2025

The defence secretary has unveiled plans for a new RAF fighter jet, the Tempest, which will eventually replace the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Speaking at the Farnborough airshow, Gavin Williamson unveiled a concept version of the sixth-generation fighter jet the Ministry of Defence (MoD) expects to emerge from its new combat air strategy, designed to maintain the UK’s status as a so-called “tier one” military power after Brexit.

“This is a strategy to keep control of the air, both at home and abroad, to remain a global leader in the sector,” Williamson said.

“We have been world leader in the combat air sector for a century, with an enviable array of skills and technology, and this strategy makes clear that we are determined to make sure it stays that way.”

He said he wanted the Tempest to be flying alongside the existing fleet of Typhoons and the US-made F-35s by 2035.

  1. Could this be like "Tempest in a Teapot?" So he wants this flying alongside American F-35s by 2035 does he? Did someone not bother to explain to him that America will have scrapped the F-35 long before 2035 because either a.)it is prohibitively expensive, b.)the platform is unworkable and ineffective to meet the threats America faces, or c.)a combination of a and b.

I think c is the most likely answer. Nonetheless it does reveal just how out of touch with reality so called "western" leaders really are. We are going to design a fighter to fly 17 years from now along side F-35s that won't be flying then and we can't even afford it!!

This is why Russia cancelled the PAK-FA. It has nothing to do with not being able to afford it. Of course I could have easily told the punditry all of this. It has everything to do with they observed potential adversaries first hand in Syria, learned they aren't nearly as tough as some like to think they are, and they've watched "westerners" make stupid decision after stupid decision. In other words, they've learned America and the "west" are hardly a threat. As such, the advanced fighter isn't needed. If things change, they can always restart mass production.

Then along comes president Trump who says and thinks "hey maybe it'd be a swell idea to maybe just maybe step back from policies that foment and exacerbate Cold War 2 and well maybe it'd be prudent to look for ways to end a war we don't need, can't really afford, and winning would be problematic at best." Then along comes crazed pundits possibly egged on by opposition in BOTH political parties who seem h!ll bent on fomenting and expanding this folly at pretty much any cost!! The Greeks had a saying that whomever the gods wished to destroy they first made mad.

Is this what is happening to the current US political system along with the pundits? Are the American people going to allow them to destroy us along with them? Hint: Engaging in conflicts we don't need, can't readily afford, winning is problematic is best, and even if we "win" we gain nothing of value at enormous cost is hardly a recipe for making our country great. With a goal of making our country great POTUS has correctly realized that preferably Cold War 2 needs to be ended. At a minimum, tensions need to be reduced.
