China Has Successfully Test-Fired A Hypersonic Aircraft

SCMP: China’s hypersonic aircraft, Starry Sky-2, could be used to carry nuclear missiles at six times the speed of sound

First test flight of experimental design, which rides its own shock waves, deemed a ‘huge success’

China has successfully tested a new hypersonic aircraft that could one day be used to carry missiles at such speeds as to make them unstoppable, according to scientists involved in the project.

The Starry Sky-2, which is an experimental design known as waverider – for its ability to ride on the shock waves it generates – completed its first test flight on Friday at an undisclosed location in northwest China, the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics said in a statement issued on Monday.

The aircraft was carried into space by a multistage rocket before separating and relying on its own power. During independent flight it conducted extreme turning manoeuvres, maintained velocities above Mach 5.5 (five-and-a-half times the speed of sound) for more than 400 seconds, and achieved a top speed of Mach 6, or 7,344km/h (4,563mph) the statement said.

  1. So what? The Blackbird-SR-71 was a hypersonic aircraft.. sure, only half the speed, but it was much, much larger, had human passengers, could carry a payload, and looked cool as fuck https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_SR-71_Blackbird

oh, and it first flew 60 years ago! :) So, China basically made it to 1964 now, congrats guys! 1.5billion people, so impressive, so much tech! :)

  4. Thank you anon for that added info, very valuable, and the humour adds depth, after all, by your statement, they are 60 years behind, and the only glitch is speed to avoid interception. Very good sir, and you don't need to be anonymous. I would read more from you. A raging liberal will do well to learn all the interesting facts before slamming a perceived opponent. Thank you.

  6. You know Anon China is a big country with a lot of population, significantly more than the US has. It is not a war mongering nation so development of its military abilities has not been the priority of that country until now. If you are a war mongering nation you would expect to see leading edge technology. If the US paid just a little bit of attention to the needs of its people instead of the war mongering industry it would be a much better place and maybe have a universal healthcare program for its people. It doesn't.

I'm sure you remember, years ago, when China shot down one of their defunct satellites and the US scrambled to show that they could do the same. They played catch up then but they will never catch up to the rest of the world in healthcare.

When you grow up and if you reach old age you will know what I am talking about.

  7. I find it fascinating that China is supposedly making these fantastic leaps in Hyper-sonic aircraft, while simultaneously buying Russian military and western civilian jet engines.

China can't make a reliable jet turbine, but hypersonic is just around the corner?!?!
    Logic evades!
