Is U.S. Mission Creep In Syria Part Of The Strategy To Contain Iran?

U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers secure a landing zone near Al Tanf in southern Syria. The garrison there, at the border of Iraq, is one of many dotting Syria that presents a challenge for the U.S. presence in the country. (Army)

Military Times: The White House just revealed massive mission creep in Syria. Here’s why.

The Islamic State is on the brink of total military defeat ― but don’t expect U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria to be coming home anytime soon.

The Islamic State’s caliphate has collapsed. They have almost no territory remaining except for a small piece of eastern Syria and the militants appear to have very little combat power left.

At the same time, ISIS is losing its international influence as terrorist attacks in the West are declining. And the latest intelligence reports suggest the group has very little ― if any ― operational control over its affiliate groups in other countries in Africa and beyond.

Yet top U.S. officials at the Pentagon and the White House are avoiding anything that sounds like a declaration of victory.

WNU Editor: My analysis is the same. The U.S. has made the calculation that Syria will be in turmoil for years, and the current U.S. presence in both Iraq and Syria is to contain Iran.

Better for us to be part of the Syria peace negotiations to stop Iranian influence.

Our Alamo scare has passed. Russia knows we will shoot. And we have more boots on the ground.

Military Times ought to be ashamed. This isn’t news to anyone paying attention. Here is a tip to MT, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the United States are allied in defeating Iran’s imperial ambitions. The US presence in Syria protects Israel while it relentlessly attacks Iran’s facilities in Syria. Same goes for the Saudis work in Yemen.

Let's not forget about the Kurds again. At some level we cooperate well with them and in part we want to keep this alliance strong. Just sucks they are between Iran/Iraq, Iran/Syria and Turkey.

Us is there because they obey Israel. And Israel wants to grab more land due to gas. Both are self serving cunts that are actually not fighting terrorism. If anything they support terrorism

MF, I agree with your comments concerning the Kurds. My impression is they are the best allies we've had in the middle east for some time, short of Israel.
Not counting the Europeon[sp] allies.

You are trying to sound west so that you use the word cunts, but your political comment clearly makes it clear that you are a Putin troll paid for pumping in the Putin Pope
