ABC News: Chinese warship came within 45 yards of USS Decatur in South China Sea: US

The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Decatur had to maneuver to avoid a collision on Sunday after a Chinese warship came within 45 yards of its bow as the American ship transited a disputed island chain in the South China Sea on Sunday, U.S. defense officials said.

The close encounter that the U.S. Navy characterized as "unsafe and unprofessional" comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and China.

"At approximately 0830 local time on September 30, a PRC LUYANG destroyer approached USS DECATUR in an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver in the vicinity of Gaven Reef in the South China Sea," said Capt. Charlie Brown, a U.S. Pacific Fleet Spokesman.

WNU Editor: I am looking forward to the video. And if there was a collision .... coupled with major damage to the USS Decatur .... the trade war with China is going to be the least of everyone's concerns.

  1. Its a truly amateur, idiotic strategy on China's part to play jousting games with 7,000 ton disp. warships. Professional Navies don't do it like that. I don't recall the Soviet Navy ever doing that.

They did the same thing with one of their fighter jets vs. a P-3 Orion in 2000. Didn't work out well for anyone. Especially the idiotic Chinese fighter pilot who was sucked out of his plane and died horribly.

  2. China is very dangerous and looking for war. We can thank the jaded and immoral former US President Bill Clinton for welcoming Communist China into the worlds economic system in return for ?. With his assistance, China gained the financial wherewithal to modernize and become the true international threat it is today. Before that, China was only a threat to its own people and its immediate neighbors.

  3. This will finished very badly. China put itself in a corner: there is no way to escape this game. Either China lets it go, and it look weak, or it increase the fight and that's war. China is still on the Obama era and think America will blink, but China is not facing Chamberlain and Daladier. The road will be more tough.

    1. China will not attack an American ship. They will go for a weaker navy they can win for sure against in this first military public conflict about the south China Sea. Look at the 9 dash territorial claim. Most is stretching along Vietnam's long coastal line. Together with the already existing artificial islands, china's strategy must be to a) have an easy, fast victory that increases confidence and experience and claim of the area and b) if that weaker navy were to retaliate then an island will be taken from that weaker land.
Vietnam, and I know this from first hand, is very concerned about losing some of their islands to the Chinese and have forward positioned some soldiers. I don't know how many of course, but it won't be enough against China. And Vietnam will have to back down or lose the entire islands on their coast, which would totally solidify Chinese claims and Chinese territory in those waters by more than a thousand miles. And Vietnam was already threatened with war by china about a year ago (it was about an oil drilling platform in disputed waters)...

China will not attack Philippines, they hope to continue exploiting the partnership (with the philipine's president's son connected to Chinese drug mafia and therefore absolutely in their hands if he doesn't want to lose his own son ), they can't attack Japan and win quickly (and the US would help Japan), they cannot attack Singapore because they don't have any territory they want and a too strong navy to make it worth it. ..it obviously cannot be Australia and New Zealand (both parts of the 5 eyes group), ..Indonesia and Malaysia are possible. .just not sure it fits the past Chinese behaviour. My money is on Vietnam. But Vietnamese are smart and know the Chinese will use any incident to invade those islands. I hope Trump will deepen relations with Vietnam, that's something Obama started and therefore I'm not sure. .but I hope he'll get over it ;)

  4. You can bet your asses the Chinese (and likely the American) ship was protected by a sub. China will provoke a conflict and have the backup ready to win. But I don't think it will be the US navy. More likely Vietnam...and if Vietnam fails to back down, great - fits right into the Chinese plan to invade key islands they claim in the 9dash line and would expand their south China bases to the east. My suggestion to trump is to speed up military cooperation with Vietnam, and expand cooperation with Philippines,Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore
