The historical record is clear, those people (regardless of government) put up a hell of a fight and made unimaginable sacrifices.
As a footnote: I think Trump will go for the trolling effect alone.

Admits to what? The Stalinist era and gulags? They very much do admit to those things. As of late they've been building memorials to the victims in many of the major cities, despite the protests of the modern communist party to not spend public funds on something that they believe tarnishes their reputation.

I'd say the Russians are entitled to a parade in service of their lost citizens, given that they account for 38% of all deaths during the war. No other nation passes 10% on that metric. Just take the parade for what it is: a bit of jingoism mixed in with a patriotic tribute to their lost parents and grandparents. Putin himself watched his two brothers die during the siege of Leningrad. You can hardly throw a stone in Russia without hitting someone who lost a loved one in WW2.

We know the past. Our past? killing Indians and slavery
Trump should go. Russia, under dictator
Stalin, allied with Hitler but discovered soon that was big mistake. Trump should be present to honor the victory in WWII and to show that even draft dodgers care. The problem if he goes? He is (perhaps) going to return home

‘Putin himself watched his two brothers die during the siege of Leningrad’. President Putin was not yet born for almost another decade after the Siege of Leningrad. Though that does not negate the suffering and memory of so many lost and affected.
