New York Times: In Iran’s Hierarchy, Talks With Trump Are Now Seen as Inevitable

In the power circles of Tehran, where “Death to America” is regularly chanted, the idea has taken hold that Iran must eventually negotiate with President Trump, according to several people with knowledge of the shift.

These people said Iran’s leadership had concluded that Mr. Trump could be re-elected and that the country cannot withstand six more years of the onerous sanctions he has imposed.

It is a remarkable turnabout for the political establishment in Tehran, which for the past 40 years has staked its legitimacy on defiance of the United States but has been particularly hostile toward Mr. Trump.

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran teased a possible meeting with Mr. Trump earlier this week, indicating he would be willing if it would benefit Iranians.

Mr. Rouhani reversed himself within 24 hours, suggesting he may have been overruled by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But the people with knowledge of the Iranian hierarchy’s thinking said Mr. Rouhani’s behavior should be viewed as part of the emerging new strategy.

They said the strategy was following two parallel tracks: displaying a more defiant position on Iran’s military and nuclear energy policies to irritate Mr. Trump, while signaling a willingness to talk under certain conditions, appealing to what are seen as his deal-maker instincts.

WNU Editor: Nothing lasts forever. The U.S. and Iran will enter into talks sometime in the future. The question that remains unanswered is when, and under what terms?

    1. Well it's Squirrel and his magic acorn. Look for the one that's got "Joe Hill" written on it, you know by Joan Baez and Lawrence O'Donnell.

  3. I'm not sure what a Trump rally or David Loch's heirs have to do with the topic of the post which is the possibility of talks between the US and Iran. With that said I am pretty sure that Mr. Koch would have wanted as much of his hard earned wealth to go to his heirs as possible and, as for a Trump rally, IMHO it comes down to personal interests. IMHO voting against Trump = voting against American interest. With that said many are easily manipulated. We will just have to wait and see how the people vote.

Now as for the topic at hand. It is true that nothing lasts forever. If Iran is successful in their genocide attempt against America this obviously eliminates the need for talks. Frankly, I don't think they ever envisioned a possibility where they might actually lose. With the alliances they've enjoyed over the years and the fact that they have generally gotten away with treating America like a proverbial rented mule I wouldn't have envisioned such a possibility either. Frankly I would have suspected our leadership would eventually capitulate in order to avoid genocide.

With Trump in office this seems to have changed. There is now a real possibility America might actually win this fight. As such, they may now entertain the possibility of talks to end the conflict. I think the ultimate goal here should be to get this to a UN Tribunal or something like this where ultimately all outstanding issues can be settled. At this point, I don't think it is feasible as the tribunal would simply rubberstamp whatever Iran wanted, we lack any kind of mechanism to ensure Iranian compliance with any of the findings of a tribunal should it not be favorable to America, and I see no way to counter Iranian fear and intimidation tactics that would be bound to occur. Hopefully we can get there and soon.
