Daily Beast: Coronavirus May Explode in U.S. Overnight Just Like in Italy
Get ready for a serious test of broken American health infrastructure.
Sooner or later, it’s virtually bound to happen.
Though novel 2019 coronavirus cases in the United States have so far ticked up in fits and starts, experts on deadly diseases say Americans should be prepared to see an overnight boom in cases that mirror the skyrocketing outbreaks in Italy and South Korea.
At last count from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 60 confirmed novel 2019 coronavirus cases in the U.S. One of those cases—in northern California—marked the first case of unknown origin, as The Washington Post first reported Wednesday. Fourteen patients came through the American health system after traveling to China or having close contact with someone who had. The rest were either repatriated individuals who fled the vicinity of the virus’s origin in China on State Department-chartered planes or else were rescued from the disastrous Diamond Princess cruise ship outbreak.
Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, acknowledged Tuesday that community spread—when cases are detected in an area but the source of the infection is not known—was very likely to cause more infections in the United States. The case in California, which a CDC statement said was “picked up by astute clinicians,” appeared to prove her right, and set the stage for a serious test of American health infrastructure after years of atrophy.
In Italy, officials have not been able to trace the origin of infections, which skyrocketed from just four on Friday to more than 528 by Thursday, killing at least 14 people. While each country faces its own health and containment challenges, experts say, there is little reason to believe the United States won’t soon face a similar coronavirus surge, even as President Trump on Wednesday urged calm and put Vice President Mike Pence in charge of the disease’s containment.

WNU Editor: For the past few days I have been reading up on the 1919 Spanish Influenza outbreak. This is exactly what happened. One day there were no cases. Next day an explosion of cases and deaths that increased with time.

With the way blue cities are run, they shall soon be ghost towns.
Look at LA, they already have a typhus outbreak, which is affecting municipal employees, because the homeless are camped right outside the building.
Democrat mayors are literally making their municipal employees sick with deadly diseases and putting their employees' lives at risk all for their own selfish political gain.

Democrats politicians - 'leaders'. who treat other people as cattle to be herded.
Hi, from Italy, the initial problem was the difference and contrast among government disposition and regional powers in healthcare matter. Yours need to know that, in Italy, regions have important attributions and money on public sanity, even in emergency, also the majors may intervene in local emergency. And Lombardia and Veneto regions as the town of Codogno and the province of Lodi (where epidemic is started) are leaded by The League, a far right party, the biggest today in Italy, who is on the opposition to the actual government 5 Stars Movement-PD.
The political conflict reflect in an initial lower coordination on healthcare controls.
The other problem was a 38 year old moron without civic sense that spread the virus for days, without informing he has encountered a friend come from China.
But the problem of lower civic sense is a common problem in our country, and, yes, politicians try to damage each others even in a national emergency. Showing, for me, who really are those racist asshole of The League.
And how much is fundamental a good national healthcare system, because private doing nothing against the epidemic.
Northern Italy actually has a healthy economy unlike other parts of Italy.
The socialists in Italy today are doing what the Roman Empire did to Italians back in the day and wondering why there is no birth rate, no patriotism, and no economy.
If one would actually study history and economics outside of reading regurgitations of Das Capital, you might be able to buy a vowel.
You never said where the Chinese friend went or his travel. Interesting. He was colored so he could do no wrong. So the 38 year old asshole who votes for the League is a racists asshole? You got to do better than that RC. Put a few brain cells in gear next time.
I was reading stuff at the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
It is not the first time I have seen it, but they discussed nutrition and the influenza virus death rate.
There was a lot of malnutrition due to the war and init aftermath. People of all ages were stressed. Take Germany after November 11, 1918. Britain still had a food embargo against them.
Take today. East Africa will be hit hard. There will be a famine due to the locust plague. The plague is caused by luddite liberals. They do not want to spray for locusts on a mass scale. That and the UN, NGO's, and libs have teamed up in other ways to codify bad farming practices.
Information about LA is very interetting!! Thank you for sharing it. Actually this is part of the reasoning behind secure borders and the so called "wall" to halt the spread of disease from 3rd world countries we're they lack the resources or know how to deal with these things. In this respect, the travel restrictions regarding Chjna and the government quarantines while they seem VERY draconian may not have been such a bad idea after all even though POTUS was criticized for them.
For what it's worth, I do not envision blue cities becoming ghost towns. I still think we are experiencing a hysterical overreaction to this. This leads to the "38 year old moron." Not wanting to be brutalized in a government internment camp naturally he did not self report. Here is an example where the overreaction likely created an even bigger problem. Our overreaction to this is likely to create even bigger problems than the disease itself.
Mr Poster--what is going on in Russian with the virus?
Anon (10:15)
I don't know for sure. I have never been to Russia nor do I have any contacts there. If you really wanted to know, your best bet would be to actually go there observe the situation yourself.
For the remainder of this post, I am going to assume this isn't practical or feasible. A possible source of information on this would be the editor himself as he is Russian and has contacts within Russia. An Ametican such as myself who has no ties to Russia or any Russian contacts associated with Russia would not be a good source for information on this.
Now, in the absence of direct first hand information, we can make inferences based upon the information available, our experiences, and applying common sense. I do recall early on Russia temporarily closed its border with China. I haven't heard much sense and nothing significant from Putin or the Russian government in this. Putin's statements are well followed by the media. As such, any statements would've been picked up. Essentially it would seem that the situation in Russia is relatively well controlled. It would seem the decisive actions taken early on have thus far worked. Our similar approaches with travel restrictions regarding China appear to have been effective as well. The situation in the US is currently well controlled and based on the evidence I have now it seems to be well controlled as well.
Somehow I'm pretty sure you did not ask this question hoping to learn. I think you are actually trying to troll. Nevertheless I chose to respond for the benefit of those who are trying to learn and wish to discuss these things
