Daily Mail: Crew of gunship 'Spooky 41' are all awarded medals after raining fire on ISIS militants for NINE hours to allow rescue of 15 wounded soldiers in Afghanistan battle likened to Iwo Jima

* Aircrew of the AC-130U gunship 'Spooky 41' with Hurlburt Field's 4th Special Operations Squadron were honored at the military facility in Fort Walton Beach
* The 14-man crew received two Distinguished Flying Crosses and 12 Air Medals for for providing nine hours of fire support

* DFCs are awarded for 'Heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight'

The crew of a U.S. gunship have been awarded bravery medals at a ceremony in Florida after they rained fire down on Islamic State militants for hours, as allied soldiers on the ground were whisked to safety.

Forces on the ground came under heavy fire from ISIS militants in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan on April 3, 2019, in a ferocious fight which one Major on the ground likened to infamous WW2 battle Iwo Jima.

They called for backup from 'Spooky 41' - a AC-13OU gunship, and the Hercules-variant plane arrived within minutes to provide covering fire and ensure medical helicopters could safely evacuate the injured.

The crew were up in the air for nine hours and managed to suppress enemy fire during the evacuation of 15 wounded soldiers.

I like you 5:41. You're stupid. Cocky & incompetent. Just the way I like them.

I see an intel failure.

Maybe art of the failure was the Taliban knew who the informant(s) were for the Coalition and turned them and fed them bad informaition.

The Taliban after all drive car bombs into hospitals, shoot women for whatever in soccer stadiums for entertainment (You have these vids next to your crush porn collection) and shoot school girls because they want to learn how to read.

So passing bad info to the coalition after turning someone would not beyond the pale for them.

Thing is Resistance Media does not shrink to investigate and defend unlike MSM.

Fazman,

With all due respect, these are not drone pilots. They have skin in the game. They are not is not in the blood and sand dying by inches.

It can nonetheless nerve wracking and when you die it is quick. There is no triage and no second chances.

During the Afghan War of 1979 to 1989, the Chinese provided the muj with their knock off of the SA-7. The British provided them with the Blowpipe. Of course the US provided them the Stinger.

Might not the Iranians, Russians, Chinese, Turks or Pakistanis provide the mujaheddin with manpads now?

A gunship is not a fast mover. It is a pinpoint attack and loiters. Which is very good for friendly ground forces. It also provides time for Taliban to bring manpad to the battle zone. Nine hours is a long time . It is long enough to bring a manpad to a battle zone via motorcycle.

Jets shoot & scoot. Spooky's loiter. Loitering is risky.

That is my take anyway and I do not particularly like Air Force.
