Reuters: COVID-19 cases in Europe back to March level, EU health body says
BRUSSELS, Sept 2 (Reuters) - COVID-19 infections in Europe are back to levels seen in March when the outbreak began its peak phase there, the head of the European Union's public health agency said on Wednesday, noting however school reopenings did not necessarily pose new risks.
"The virus has not been sleeping over the summer. It did not take vacation," Andrea Ammon, head of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), told EU lawmakers in a regular hearing.
She said this week's data showed that across Europe there were 46 cases per 100,000 people. "We are almost back to numbers that we have seen in March," Ammon said.
Infections in March in Europe began growing steadily to about 40 per 100,000 people at the end of the month, according to ECDC data, and kept increasing to around 70 per 100,000 by the end of April.
The current increase of cases was due in part to more testing.

Update: European COVID-19 cases surpass 4M amid 2nd wave of virus (Daily Sabah)
WNU Editor:The cases are up but the mortality rates have not increased at the same rate. Is Europe dealing with a weaker strain of Covid-19. I can only hope so.
It is most certanily expanded testing. Case numbers are good for nothing, honestly.

If you locked down real hard, real quickly, then stiff like this happens every time you open up.
My advice is to learn Mandarin, because with politicians like these, you are definitely going to need it.
ReplyDeleteCase #s are good for scaring children. Cases requiring hospitalization or ICU matter. The rest is nonsense.
Some of the deaths due to COVID have been due to policy decisions. they did not want the hospitals overrun, so they said if you have mild symptoms, wait until the get severe symptoms to get checked out. The hospitals were never overrun. In fact hospitals laid off people due to too few patients. PIO.
The disease is easier to treat if caught earlier with cheaper drugs of you catch it earlier. and you have better outcomes. Waiting until sever symptoms is like not getting colon cancer screening and only going to the doctor when in severe pain and finding out you have stage IV colon cancer. PIO
With the pervasive testing, I think we can identify people with COVID most of the time (barring false positives and negatives) and treat them without blanket lockdowns. PIO
Democrats want to take hydroxychloroquine off the market since Trump mentioned it and only use the prohibitively expensive remdesivir. Remdesivir will put you in the poor house and then you will need Democrat provided welfare. Remdesivir looks like it doesn't work after more extensive testing. Perfect for the Democrats. An ongoing emergency so they can use ever more power. PIO
With universal testing we will have something we never had before. A sample size of nearly 100% for a respiratory virus,. We willhave a baseline. If we can get the same for all the rhino and flu viruses, we can ave good baselines, so that we do not overreact in the future with scare porn form the media the makes more money the more ink they spill. PIO
Boohoo. The masculine has been practically annihilated in western civilization. Covid this blm that. Abortion as birth control. The politicalization of our children in schools. The rise of socialism in our highest institutions. I'm sick of half-men. Shame on us all.
ReplyDeleteIs Europe dealing with a strain? It's certainly possible. It's also possible that the human immune system has learned from previous encounters with this and is better able to handle it.
ReplyDeleteWith that said I think a comparison of cases to deaths from April and today is a comparison of apples to oranges. In America we are seeing a similar situation as Europe is. We have placed a MASSIVE emphasis on contact tracing and are now identifying vast numbers of the asymptomatic and those with mild symptoms who normally wouldn't have sought medical attention. In contrast back in March and April we were dealing with very sick people.
Additionally, According to several of my contacts in the medical industry there is also a huge problem with the testing. Essentially the tests are designed in such as a way to err on the side of "false positives." Naturally having tests readily available that tend to err on the side of "false posited" would be expected to cause cases to "rise" dramatically. Add to this the financial incentives that are in the system to count deaths as caused by COVID when they weren't and deaths from COVID would see a dramatic rise as well.
Little to none of this was put in place back in March and April. For better or worse, America generally follows the lead of Western Europe. As such, I would expect Western Europe's situation to be very similar to ours. In the current situation, both cases and deaths arev WAY DOWN across the board. As long as the leadership continues to push mass testing, contact tracing, and relies on tests that tend to yield false positives, the numbers will artificially high for a very long time.
The only numbers to worry about are hospitalizations, how many people and who becomes seriously ill, and deaths from COVID as opposed to who dies with the disease. All other numbers aren't particularly important with total number of cases being virtually irrelevant from a policy making perspective unless that is the goal is to scare people.
How is it that India records 700k in a day recently, EU back to March levels, South America an epicentre etc.. etc..
ReplyDeleteNot a word about China?
Its as if there are near zero cases..
How is this so?
We know what this virus does and how to treat it or lesson its symptoms. There is no cure but its like the flu, treat the symptoms and it goes away. In general.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find is interesting;
ReplyDeleteNever before , not even during all of WW2, will so much destruction have originated in a country and no one asks any questions.
Tens of trillions(!) destroyed, tens of millions if not more will have died before all this is over(UN estimates up to 200 million dead), and yet no one wants reparations from China or talks about it.
Why not? Are we at war with them and our leaders wait for the right time? Haha if so, when? our industries and lives have been destroyed, China was allowed to insult us on top, told us not to complain when they first bought up PPE around the world, then sold faulty equipment to us and then bought up the bankrupt business under our feet.
And our leaders let this all happen.
When will we get revenge for this crime against humanity and the world, perpetrated by the Chinese CCP?
When will our leaders stand up, or do we first need to get rid of them? I think many will not wait any longer
